Sunday, Jan. 25, Green Valley – Stableford

Problems again today in Green Valley; two weeks ago when we arrived on the tee box at our allotted time we discovered that the group who were in front of us had brought out a much larger group than they had booked and we had to wait over forty five minutes before we could tee off.  We complained that day to the management and were assured that it wouldn’t happen again.  However, when we arrived this Sunday we found the same situation, even though we had been given a tee time on the previous evening.

Not only did this mean that our large group had to wait forty minutes to tee off, but all the people who had booked after us had to wait also.  We are given a certain amount of tee times and if we have more people wanting to play than we have reserved spots, then we tell them that we cannot take them.  Obviously other people do not do the same and don’t mind how much they inconvenience other people.

Paul Pavloff.Paul Pavloff.

Paul Pavloff (H/cap 7) had the best score of the day, winning A Flight with thirty eight points.  Joe McArdle (12) looked at one stage like he was going to repeat what he did two weeks previously when he had twenty one on the front nine and nine on the back.  Today he again had twenty one on the front and then only two on the next three holes, but he pulled himself together and finished with thirty seven to come second in the flight.  Third place went to William Bishop (16) with thirty three, beating Russell Gilroy (17) on count back.

In B Flight Gilbert Brosnan (23) was the winner with thirty four points, edging out Pat Carthy (25) on a count back.  In third was Frank McGowan (18) with thirty two points and he also won a count back, this time over Ger Lodge (20) who took fourth.

Shaun Merriman, Joe Peters, Teddy Lodge, Russell Gilroy and Paul Pavloff shared the ‘2’s pot.

Tuesday, Jan. 27, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

We had a large group out today at Mountain Shadow and to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves we decided to give them a choice of which tee to play off – white or blue.  As it turned out, exactly fifty per cent of the group decided to play off each so we had an even competition.

Actually Mountain Shadow is a short course, even off the blue tees and sometimes it is an advantage to play off them as it keeps your drives out of the trees.  The whole trick here is staying out of the trees and mastering the greens, not about how far you hit the ball.  To prove it, today the scoring off the blues was much better than that off the shorter whites.

Playing off the blues, Paul Pavloff (7) had the best score of the day and won with thirty nine points.  Ger Lodge (20) was second with thirty eight and his brother Teddy (12) came in third with thirty six.

Off the white tees John Rush (18) was the winner with thirty five points, one ahead of Joe Peters (19) in second.  Frank McGowan (18) completed the podium in third with thirty.

There were no ‘2’s winners today.

Thursday, Jan. 29, Subhapreuk – Stableford

A long trip today to Subhapreuk G.C. but well worth it.  This is an absolutely beautiful golf course and everything about it is five star: the clubhouse, locker rooms and the course itself is a real gem and at only one thousand baht green fee it is unbelievable value.  The only fault you could say about it is that they water the fairways too much, making what is a long course play even longer.

Again today we offered a choice of tees and the vast majority of us decided to play off the Champion tees, while the rest played off the Members’ tees.  I think a lot of us, including myself, are not quite as good as we think we are as the Champion tees beat most of us up.  Only one of our group managed to beat par, that was Des Griffith who had a magnificent thirty nine points off his nine handicap and won by a clear six points.  Teddy Lodge (12) was second with thirty three and Marty Rock (9) came third with thirty, beating Paul Pavloff (7) on a count back.  On his last game with us for this visit, Ger Lodge (20) came fifth with twenty nine points.

Off the Members’ tees, Gilbert Brosnan (23) won the day with thirty three points, four up on Brian Lalor (23) in second.

We had three ‘2’s today from Gilbert Brosnan, Mike Korney and Marty Rock.
