Sunday, June 22, Green Valley – Stableford

A Flight

1st Les Cobban (8) 41pts

2nd Freddy Starbeck (12) 38pts

3rd Daniel Willet (12) 38pts

B Flight

1st Tom Byrne (16) 39pts

2nd Gerry Roche (20) 38pts

3rd Terry Mangan (15) 38pts

Near Pins:  No 5 Gabriel Enright, No 8 Gerry Roche, No 12 Dave Stockman, No 16 Tom Byrne.

Les Cobban was man of the match today with an A Flight winning 41 points.  Looking up at Les on the podium were two regular society members, Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck and Danny Willet, both three shots back of Les.  Danny generously gave Freddy the second spot on the podium as long as Freddy promised not to tell him about his game, and believe me there is not enough space in the Mail to do that.

B Flight was the Irish flight this day as all podium spots were took by Mick’s.  Co. Dublin’s Tom Byrne was the happiest as his 39 points filled the top spot.  As in A Flight the minor places went to count back, both with the same 38 points; Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Roche made it two out of two for Co. Dublin with Co. Wicklow’s Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan closing the flight.

Freddy Starbeck and Dave Stockman split the 2’s pot.

The Donkey was followed in the senior circuit by Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Rafferty, just a shot off the pace, and Jacob Olsen came in a further shot back.

Wednesday, June 25, Burapha A & B – Freddy’s Birthday Bash

A Flight

1st German Odermatt (12) 38pts

2nd Bruce Anderson (8) 37pts

3rd Dipty (13) 37pts

B Flight

1st Peter Henshaw (16) 39pts

2nd Aman (21) 39pts

3rd Christian Boysen (17) 39pts

C Flight

1st Martin Allard (23) 36pts

2nd Gabriel Enright (23) 35pts

3rd Leif Hallin (23) 34pts

56 players turned out to celebrate Freddy Starbeck’s 38th (sic) birthday with a prize on every one of the 18 holes for the entrants to vie for.

Once again the competition was played in very hot and humid conditions and this kept the score higher than one would normally expect from such a large field.  The exception was in B Flight that found a triumvirate of players all returning men of the match 39 points.  In the following count back, and when the divots had settled, it was the luck of the Irish that prevailed as Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw took the top spot on the podium while Aman and Christian Boysen took the second and third steps and in that order.  Commiserations must go to the unlucky Alistair Gall as there was no step on the podium for him.

In the A Flight were the lads who know how to play the game and it was German Odermatt who took the top rung with a solid 38 points.  German was a stroke clear of Bruce Anderson and Dipty, with the scales tipping in Bruce’s favour.

Martin Allard, with an even par round, was top in C Flight and the only player to sink a 2 for what must be the largest 2’s pot ever.  Gabriel Enright and Leif Hallin were strung out in one shot increments as they filled the minor flight spots.

In the battle for the golfer of the month, The Donkey and Freddy are now neck and neck with 43 points and Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan is just a shot back with only two games to play.

Back at the Phantom Bar it was party time and after the presentation Freddy rang the bell and thanked all the sponsors and everyone who played.  A big thank you also to Lewiinski’s for providing their famous buffet and everyone had a great time as the party went on into the small hours.

Friday, June 27, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

1st Colin Davis (14) 36pts

2nd Danny Willets (12) 35pts

A talented but small group, more than likely due to the not to be missed Freddy’s Birthday Bash on Wednesday, turned out to take on the Mountain Shadow layout on Friday.  The Donkey, resilient as ever, led the field in with a solid even par round and was one clear of Danny Willets.

The Donkey and ‘pork chop’ Mangan split the 2’s pot.
