Pattaya Links Golf Society

Tuesday, 21st February dawned very warm and an enthusiastic group of Pattaya Golf Society members took a later departure for Crystal Bay to play a stableford competition at the customer friendly track.  Course conditions were good and all was set for some excellent golf.

On the previous visit the group suffered the ignominy of low scores across the board but this day was to see a change.  All three of the principals in the single flight broke par with Mike King taking third place with 37 points and Mike Firkin taking second with 38.  The day’s winner was Huw Phillips and his score of 39 points put the PGS record right.

There was only one ‘2’ as John Chelo performed the trick on the teasing C7.  Mike Wilsher qualified for the consolation beer but declined in favour of non-combatant Mr Len, still house-bound with a sick wife and domestic duties.  “Get well soon” was the message from the lads and the boss could not agree more!

Flood tops the field

Thursday, 23rd February saw the Pattaya Links Golf Society visit Greenwood to play a monthly medal round on the testing B and C nines, which were in good condition, as usual.  Some golfers considered the greens to be slower than normal but generally it was a pleasure to putt there.

The large field was divided into two flights at 18.2 and under and scores reflected the condition of the course with both flight winners breaking par.  In the second flight Irishman Chris Walsh took a podium place for the first time in a long while with net 78 taking third place.  In second was Colin Service with net 75 but the flight was won by John O’Sullivan with an excellent net 71.

In the top flight Dane Jesper Hansen held on to third place with net 73, solid stuff, and “Banjo” Bannister just nosed ahead with net 72 for second place.  The flight winner with the best score of the day was Irish golfer Karl Flood.  His net 68 showed what potential he has and the booming consistency of his sliced drives, so much a feature of his game, set the holes up for some accurate golf.  There were no birdie ‘2’s.

Newbie Rob Considine enjoyed the consolation beer and the company stayed for a long time savouring the hospitality of the Links and its comradeship.
