Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Wednesday, March 5, Pattaya Country Club – Stableford
The low season has almost kicked in here and the numbers are dwindling. Last week we wished bon voyage to Pete Sumner and his lovely lady Porn, and also to Mark Jennings, Magne Gunnarson and Horst Starchl.
We just about reached three divisions today with 33 players in attendance.
At the presentation back at Siam Cats there was a long face from Jerry McCarthy as he was awarded third place in division 2, losing on a 22/21 back-nine count back to Eiichai Matsumoto after both came in with 42 points each. The winner with an amazing 43 was Erkki Pohja.
Lindsay Phillips and Sid Ottaway.
Lindsay Phillips topped division 1 with a level par 36 points and Edward Bourn was 2 back in second on 34, beating Terry Madsen on count back.
After a few weeks off, Roar Berger bounced back today to win division 3 with 36 points while Sid Ottaway beat Bryan Priestley count back for second after they both came in with 35 points each.
Near pins went to Georges Faber, Grenville Hill, Horst Starchl, Mauri Friman, Paul Hartley, Timo Kakkuri and Burnie Sinclair.
Only one ‘2’ recorded today and it came in division 2 where Sid Ottaway birdied the 12th.
Friday, March 7, Eastern Star – Stableford
The course is still improving here every week, especially the greens, but the grass around the lake on the 4th and 5th holes was almost a foot high and this was reported to the management as we returned to the clubhouse.
There were nine groups out in total and Tony Oakes recorded the best score of the day, winning division 1 with a fine 38 points. Paul Hartley, in his last game with us before returning to the UK, took second place with 37, beating Chris Voller on a 21/20 back-nine count back.
Iain Walsh topped division 2 standings with a level par 36, beating second placed Howard Stanley by two points and there were ironic jeers from the crowd as Rod Howett picked up the third place with just 30.
Near pins were claimed by Dennis Scougal, Harry Vincenzi, Chris Voller (2), Jim Connelly, Frank Kelly, Walter Weber and Bob Young.
Tony Oakes, Bryan Rought and Dennis Scougall each scored birdies to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while a rollover ensued in division to the following Friday.
