IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Links Bar
Greenwood was in good condition with recovering greens on Monday, 27th June when the Pattaya Golf Society visited to play a stableford round on the A and B nines. The moderate sized field enjoyed an empty course and scoring was excellent with the field average a splendid 33 points.
With Alan Flynn birdying the short A 6th hole results saw Wichai Tananusorn finishing third with 35 points, one behind Bryan Barrell’s 36 points. Bryan was playing his first round with the group for two years and it was a wonderful reunion for him and his mates in the group. The winner was Andrew Purdie with a fine 37 points and it should have been better had the golfing gods not conspired to bounce his putt out of the hole after hitting the collar of the cup.
All in all it had been a good start to another golfing week with the PGS.
Another close call at Pattana
Pattana is always a treat to play and the Pattaya Golf Society chose the option on Wednesday, 29th June to play a medal competition on the C and A nines which were in the usual excellent condition. The start was from the yellow tees as the course would be a long 6300 yards as a result of soft fairways and a restriction on golf carts.
On a virtually empty course good progress was made and the vagaries of strokeplay focused the golfers, resulting in another tight contest for the PGS.
Sharing second place were Swedish golfer Tomas Nilsson and American member Brian Tully both recording a fine net 71. The winner was Aussie golfer Kevin Timbrell who posted a two-under par net 70, an excellent effort in the conditions and circumstances.
There were three birdie ‘2’s with Andrew Purdie, Tomas Nilsson and Brian Tully sharing the pot and the Booby Bevy was shared by the low scoring duo of Mike Wilsher, not feeling himself all day, and Colin Service on his final round this trip.
Once again Pattana had provided a curse which could be a challenge and competitive to all in the field.
A Seil special at Mountain Shadow
On Friday, 1st July The Pattaya Golf Society visited an empty Mountain Shadow to play a stableford competition from the blue tees on a course which was in very good condition and with greens which posed a challenge for pace and control with “grain” very much in evidence. As so often golfers raise their games here and this day was no exception with a strong breeze blowing throughout, just to add another testing ingredient to the mix.
The group saw twop birdie ‘2’s with Kevin Timbrell opening the pot on the fifth and Seil Pete closing it on the fifteenth. The same golfers were in the frame as Kevin shot 40 points for second (!) to end a very good week. His position was usurped by a round of quality golf by Seil Pete, a seven handicapper, who posted the best gross of the day (73) on his way to 42 points and his best performance with the group for a long time.
It was all memorable stuff and Brian Tully had a memory to cherish with his first Booby Bevy after his splendid round on Wednesday was obscured by his low score on this occasion. It ended a week of fine golf with the PGS.
