Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, April 2, Crystal Bay C&A – Stableford
The low season seems to have arrived, as only 14 golfers turned out today, meaning only one flight. We arrived to find the course to be wonderfully quiet, and teed off as soon as we were on the tee. The round progressed smoothly and everyone was back in the clubhouse in around 4 hours.
Rab McDonald continued his recent good form to start off the month with a well deserved win, one point ahead of John Graham.
1st Rab McDonald (15) 38pts
2nd John Graham (10) 37pts
3rd J.J. Harney (12) 36pts
4th Gordon Melia (18) 36pts
Near Pins: Keith Norman, Gordon Melia, Paul Smith, and Raleigh Gosney
Wednesday, April 4, Plutuluang W&N – Stableford
The last time we visited the Navy course we had to wait 45 minutes for caddies, but today we arrived to find the course deserted – what a difference a month makes!
A good week for Rab McDonald.
The course was in good condition, but as usual here, the greens were painfully slow. Only 3 players bettered their handicap, with Mark Stanley and Geoff Cox tied on 38 points, but Mark winning the day on a count back.
Reg Smart made a welcome return after his recent heart operation, but unfortunately couldn’t make it onto the podium. Great to see you back Reg, and make sure you get back to full fitness soon.
No appearance from PJ today, who is no great lover of the Navy course and refers to the fairways as “cabbage patch”.
1st Mark Stanley (12) 38pts
2nd Geoff Cox (15) 38pts
3rd J.J. Harney (12) 37pts
4th Rab McDonald (15) 36pts
Near Pins: Mark Stanley, Gordon Melia, JJ Harney, and Geoff Cox
Friday, April 6, Khaow Keow A&B – Stableford
We arrived at Khaow Kheow to find that even though we’d confirmed the price of 1,200 Baht the day before, the management had decided to up the price to 1,500 Baht for the holiday. After some debate about trying alternatives, we decided to bite the bullet, and accept the extortion, but it certainly leaves a bad taste in the mouth – especially since we normally play here once or twice a month, year round. Maybe we’ll cut back the visits – don’t they realize that one visit less, means that the course has lost more money than they squeezed out of us today?
It was no surprise to find that the course was deserted, but there was no run on the ball, and it was playing long from the yellow tees. It was no problem to Rab McDonald though, as he easily won the day with a great score of 40 points (20 each nine) 7 points clear of second place Dave Ashman.
1st Rab McDonald (15) 40pts
2nd Dave Ashman (15) 33pts
3rd Colin Greig (8) 29pts
4th Mashi Kaneta (11) 28pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, John Graham and Mashi Kaneta
Rab Mcdonald has got off to a roaring start in the Golfer of the Month, scoring 27 points from the first three games, but the big question is, can he amass enough points before heading off back to the U.K. later this month.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us. We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome.
