PSC Golf from The Ferdinand Golf Bar
Tuesday, Sept. 15, Phoenix – Stableford
1st Maurice Roberts (12) 40pts
2nd Colin Davis (19) 37pts
3rd Bob Watson (2) 37pts
A change from the schedule today, to take advantage of Phoenix Golf Club’s extended offer of free carts on a Tuesdays, and surprise, surprise the car park was full. Why only do this offer on a Tuesday? Only they know!
Grey skies and no sun meant we had low temperatures, a light wind and perfect conditions for golf. Our first group was a 3-ball and we followed a 4-ball off the 1st tee, but on the 3rd tee they changed into a 5-ball (some kind of Asian magic!), so there was a delay on every hole. Isn’t it great how the golf courses in Thailand offer a beer/drink stop every few holes!
Maurice Roberts.
Colin (the Donkey) Davis had 17 points on the front nine and then picked it up on the back with 20, but the last group contained the real superstars, Bob Watson and Maurice Roberts, 2 and 12 handicaps respectively. Bob bogied the 1st and then had eight straight pars for 18 points on the outward nine and a birdie on the stroke index two 17th hole for 4 points saw him home with 37 in total.
Maurice had an up and down front nine but still managed 19 points. He then went for the kill with a blistering 21 on the back nine, totalling 40 for the outright win. Back in the changing rooms Colin was prematurely celebrating a win, beating Bob on the countback, when Maurice calmly threw his card into the pile, kicking the Donkey right up the derriere.
Wednesday, Sept. 16, St. Andrews – Stableford
1st Chris Martin (13) 34pts
2nd Colin Davis (19) 33pts
3rd Rod Brown (18) 28pts
We set off from Pattaya under grey skys and threats of a storm coming, but as we travelled along road 36, the skys lightened and by the time we arrived at Green Valley the weather thankfully had improved.
We had a new arrival today, Chris Martin, who resides in America but hails from Manchester, England, and after a long flight he duly blobbed the 1st hole but then his class showed and he recovered to finish the front nine with 15 points, Rod Brown started very poorly with 4 points from the first four holes but 3 straight pars left him with a creditable 16 at the turn,
Colin Davis plodded on at his own pace only to have a blob on the par-3 5th with trips from bunker to bunker in the wet sand, but he still managed to secure 17 points, maybe he longed for a day on the beach? The competition seemed to be his, but lightening does strike twice as he stumbled on the back nine and came in with 33 points for second place. Enter the aforementioned Chris Martin, who smelt the money and with 11 points from the closing 4 holes he did just enough to take the win.
Friday, Sept. 18, Crystal Bay – Stableford
1st Ian Pickles (16) 39pts
2nd Nick Shaw (19) 33pts
3rd Colin Davis (19) 32pts
The day after the big storm when everyone else was having a day off, 8 brave souls set out from Soi Buakhao with the hope that the rain was heading north, and as we arrived the signs looked good, only 7 cars on the car park and 3 of them were ours!
The reborn Ian (San Miguel Light) Pickles led from the front with a solid 18 points on the first nine holes and then when the medication took effect he stormed to 39 in total. He said later that he could not make a putt! (At times you really feel for him).
In the second group we welcomed back Sunny Khana and Narula (Dipty) Narongsak, so the match was to be between Sunny and Dipty against Colin (the Donkey) Davis and Nick (Elvis) Shaw,
To the amasement of the Colin and Nick, they were 4 up after 4 holes but then Sunny’s brilliant birdie putt on the 8th hole, pulled it back a touch. On the back 9 it was very tense with the lead going one way and back again, but with a shot advantage on the 17th, the Donkey and his jockey sealed the match. So it was on to the last hole for a possible clean sweep and the newcomers just could not stand the pressure with Colin (and Nick both parring the hole.
