PSC golf from The Golf Club
Monday, April 22, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Peter Rogers (23) 40pts
T1st Frank Riley (18) 40pts
2nd Alan Rothwell (6) 39pts
3rd Ken Aihara (4) 38pts
Peter Rogers is on fire! For the last few weeks, Peter has seen his game turn around and is scoring consistently well. Today his 40 points tied with Frank Riley to share the win. Frank has also been in the “Purple Patch” and did very well up in Khao Yai at our Songkran trip.
The recently departed (as in he’s gone back to the States) Alan Rothwell, who plays a great game off 6, took second and Ken “Mr. Up & Down” Aihara had a good day shooting 38 points off his new 4-stoke handicap. Have a good trip back Alan!
Alan Rothwell, Michael Whelan, Golf Captain Phil Smedley and Dean Whitaker.
As we are all aware, any golf course must do regular maintenance, especially on the greens, and Green Valley is no exception. This is the time of year to expect coring, sanding and verticut procedures for the well-being of the course, so get over it, it has to be done. The course still played well as ever and by the time you read this, it will be back to its regular fine condition.
Wednesday, April 24, Bangpra (white tees) – Stableford
1st Peter Rogers (23) 29pts
2nd Eddie Beilby (18) 26pts
3rd Don Lehmer (5) 23pts
Do you believe those scores? I just wanted to clarify that the above scores are not a typo and ‘Dandy’ Don Lehmer got to the podium with just 23 points! Ya never know how it’s going to go in this crazy game.
It was also good to see our old pal Eddie Beilby joining us again and posted 26 points, which in retrospect was a decent tally on the day. I guess that’s why they call him “Captain Fantastic”!
Good Luck to our mates on the ‘Darkside’ with The Players Lounge.
The story of the day once again was the winning round of our Monday co-winner, Peter Rogers. It was a tough ol’ slog out at Bangpra today, and his 29 Stableford points were head and shoulders above the rest.
It’s always fun to take newbies out to Bangpra, as the après-golf table talk will eventually turn to the toilets and what a nifty invention the Japanese have come up with.
With 2 wins for Peter so far this week, we were all wondering if he would have a hat trick on Friday.
Friday, April 26, Crystal Bay A & B (white tees) – Monthly Medal
1st Dean Whitaker (15) net 67
2nd Michael Whelan (14) net 67
3rd Mark Wood (8) net 70
4th Alan Rothwell (6) net 70
Time once again for our Monthly Medal and the venue was Crystal Bay, the former Natural Park Resort. This is a course that doesn’t get the credit it deserves for being a really nice and playable 27-hole track. Designed by Thai Takenaka, it is a lovely layout cut through swaying palm trees all around the course and is the sister course to Mountain Shadow. You can always remember this golf course by the three tall white condo buildings towering over you.
Dean Whitaker is visiting us from Australia and played well here today. He tied with Michael Whelan but won on count back to take victory on the day, and of course the TGC Monthly Medal winners Antigua shirt.
Regular Mark Wood was just off the airplane from Vietnam so not at his top form, but managed a solid 70, as did Alan Rothwell who finishes his tour of Pattaya also with a 70 on the day. Thanks guys for joining us for another great week of golf in the kingdom.
Monday, April 29, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Paul Greenaway (8) 41pts
T1st Henry O’Brien (21) 41pts
T2nd Grant Cadell (14) 39pts
T2nd Jeff Cordeiro (9) 39pts
“I spent a lot of money on birds, booze and fast cars. The rest I just squandered,” as George Best famously spoke. These days, we spend our money on green fees, caddies and fast golf carts, with little left to squander. We have seen the pound and dollar stage a bit of a comeback of late, and you can now walk up to the exchange counter here in Pattaya and get 45.5 baht to your Pound Sterling, so things are at least trending positive here.
Today was another fine Monday outing at Green Valley with Paul Greenaway and Henry O’Brien sharing the win on 41 points. Second was also a shared position with “Man of the Mountain” from Khao Yai, Grant Cadell, and Jeff Cordeiro both shooting 39.
Tuesday, April 30, Khao Kheow A & C (white tees) – Stableford
1st Ken Aihara (3) 35pts
2nd Ben Denham (3) 28pts
3rd Taro Mochida (13) 23pts
Ken is at it again, but this time playing off 3! Great shooting to our Mr. Up and Down as Ben Denham was in the middle of a Japanese 1st and 3rd with Taro Mochida getting away with a 23 point third place. You just never know!
Thursday, May 2, Burapha A & C (white tees) – Stableford
1st- Henry O’Brien (21) 38pts
2nd Alain Peshlerbe (14) 37pts
3rd Ken Aihara (3) 35pts
Kudos goes to Henry O’Brien today for his 38 points on this lovely but difficult course. Visiting Frenchman Alain Pelsherbe had one of his best rounds in Pattaya and was rewarded with a fine 37 for his first time at Burapha, and of course it’s Ken again with a respectable 35.
Everyone loved the course and condition was great. Thanks for joining us for this week’s golf at T.G.C.
