Monday, Jan. 25, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Alfie Butler (18) 41pts

2nd Peter LeNoury (12) 38pts

3rd Louis Ventimiglia (19) 34pts

The venue was the valley as TGC returned to our weekly contest in Rayong.  The weather was overcast and pleasant for a fine day of golf in paradise.

If you drive through Nice and continue through Monaco, the first Italian village you come to is the lovely town of Ventimiglia.  I can only assume that Louis had ancestry there and he should be grateful if in fact he does.  It is a stunning coastline and dotted with picture postcard images of the Italian Riviera.  Back to Pattaya and reality and we found Louis Ventimiglia had secured third place with a 34 point round.  Lou is visiting from his base in China as the country shuts down for their holidays this time of year.

Stephen Dunn.

Stalwart Peter LeNoury took second place slot, shooting two shots better than norm at 38 stableford points.  Talk of the town these days is jovial Irishman Alfie Butler.  Alfie has been playing golf a long time and now I think he is finally getting the hang of it.  A blistering 41 pointer got Alfie the top spot and more of those handsome man vouchers from Phil!

Wednesday, Jan. 27, Khao Kheow B & C (yellow tees) – Monthly Medal

1st Steve Weller (10) net 68

2nd Kenny Aihara (6) net 72

3rd Fred Birch (22) net 72

4th Alfie Butler (18) net 72

5th Barry Murnin (16) net 72

Our Monthly Medal was on the cards for today as we zipped up Highway 7 to arrive in less than 40 minutes.  We were all happy to find that we were assigned the B & C tracks of this great course as those are the most popular.  The course was found to be in perfect condition.

It was really no contest, one guy slaughtered the field and the rest were all stuck four shots back at the end of the count.  Steve (The Propeller) Weller dominated the field today and took the Medal as well as our Antigua TGC shirt for the memory.

Alfie Butler, Louis Ventimiglia & Peter LeNoury.

Kenny found time to hit the driving range but even that did not help.  Fred and Barry have been on a roll of late but couldn’t catch Steve.  Even Monday’s champ, Alfie Butler, was left in the dust.

Mr. Weller is our Canadian buddy who is out every year at this time for the annual Mulberry Ryder Cup.  If this performance is any indication, the England side had better watch out!

Friday, Jan. 29, Silky Oaks (white tees) – Stableford

1st Stephen Dunn (0) 42points

T2nd Robbie Taylor (13) 40pts

T2nd Mark Wood (10) 40pts

T2nd Rick Harris (9) 40pts

T2nd Fred Birch (28) 40pts

It is always a great feeling to hit that magic 40 point mark.  You walk off the 18th thinking “I may just be in the hunt for 1st this time” and then you get to the clubhouse to find three other blokes have just done the same!  Life can be cruel, but nothing can be more cruel than the game of golf… or more rewarding.  Timing is everything and it was just one of those days where it all went well for a whole lot of golfers.

Alfie with Steve (The Propeller) Weller and Kenny Aihara.

There was one standout for this particular round in the form of Stephen Dunn.  Mr. Dunn plays off scratch, a former golf professional, and holds 4 course records back home in England.  Stephen took a break from golf for a few years and now he is back.

His round started with a par on the first and an eagle on the second, and continued with a further 5 birdies, including the 18th.  His only slip was a bogey on the 8th with a three putt.  He was on fire, and only missed one green with his approaches, while leaving another 3 putts sliding by.

A course record must be set from the back tees, but this is most certainly our lowest gross score we have ever had turned in.  This is a tremendous round of golf and we wish Stephen the very best in the future as we eagerly anticipate what is to come from this unique talent.  Well played mate.
