Travellers Rest Golf Group
There was a competitive air around the Ned Kelly Bar, headquarters of the TRGG, last week. It originated with the start of the match play competition, which the TRGG introduced to run alongside the normal stableford competitions for the next couple of weeks. There was a good deal of banter flying to and fro and forthcoming matches were eagerly awaited and discussed and many a challenge was thrown down and backed up by a side bet.
The first two rounds were completed by all the contestants and the cannon fodder were dispatched (I include myself in that description) and the crème de la crème remain to fight it out into next week, so watch this space
Monday, Feb. 2, The Emerald – Stableford
On Monday the competitions got underway at Emerald and one of our old stalwarts, who has been showing a bit of form of late, galloped into the lead and just held on in a photo finish.
Ted Senior.
‘Father’ Ted Senior managed to win by a nose from fellow Aussie Roger Wilkinson and Gerald Halferty, who all finished on 34 points and could only be separated after a count back. I have a sneaking suspicion that wily old Ted Senior might just end up the winner of the match play as well, we shall see.
1st Ted Senior (16) 34pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (16) 34pts
3rd Gerald Halferty (20) 34pts
Tuesday, Feb. 3, Khao Kheow – Stableford
It was off to Khao Kheow (C and A courses) on Tuesday and the large number of golfers required two divisions.
The Thomas family dominated proceedings in Division 1, with father Alan managing to get the better of his son Ryan to register one up for the oldies. Tewin ‘Poopay’ Lamthong, who always gets amongst the prizes at Khao Kheow, did it again by finishing third.
In Division 2, young Jakob Skadegaard registered a win for the young ones and he was followed home by two oldies, with Joe Nagle taking second and Ted Senior third.
Div.1 (0-12)
1st Alan Thomas (5) 37pts
2nd Ryan Thomas (0) 33pts
3rd Tewin Lamthong (11) 32pts
Div.2 (13+)
1st Jakob Skadegaard (16) 34pts
2nd Joe Nagle (19) 34pts
3rd Ted Senior (16) 33pts
On Thursday the TRGG headed over to Green Valley and as usual there was another large turnout, which again required two divisions.
Mike Smith & Ken Brehm.
It was here that I met my demise in the match play competition when I came up against the redoubtable Ken Brehm, who had his best round of golf for many a month (typical of my luck lately), which enabled him to humiliate me and register the best score of the day. He played magnificently and never put a foot wrong, well done old chap and best of luck in the next round.
In Division 1 it was burly Mike Smith, who looks as though he would be quite at home in a boxing ring, who managed to outpoint the miniscule Mod Chaviraksa in second and our live in Romeo a.k.a. Tristan Gilbert took third.
As already stated Ken Brehm won Division 2 by a mile, although Derek Thorogood put up a good show to take second place and Mick Y strode into third.
Div.1 (0-13)
1st Mike Smith (6) 36pts
2nd Mod Chaviraksa (10) 35pts
3rd Tristan Gilbert (11) 32pts
Div. 2 (14+)
1st Ken Brehm (19) 41pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (15) 37pts
3rd Mick Y 36pts
Saturday, Feb. 7, Greenwood – Stableford
We rounded the week off at Greenwood (B and C courses) on Saturday and Division 1 was again headed by Mike Smith, who made it two in a row by once more shooting his handicap. Alan Thomas was one shot behind and Nick Thomas (no relative this time) took third place.
In Division 2, Mike Lam returned to Thailand to carry on where he left off by storming off with first place. Ted Senior for the third time this week finished amongst the prize money by taking second place, with Derek Thorogood, who is always in the money, finishing third.
Div.1 (0-13)
1st Mike Smith (5) 36pts
2nd Alan Thomas (5) 35pts
3rd Nick Thomas (12) 34pts
Div.2 (14+)
1st Mike Lam (22) 38pts
2nd Ted Senior (16) 36pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (14) 35pts
