Peter Sorensen.
Peter Sorensen.

Greenwood golf course is always presented in great condition, and today the A and B courses were as good as ever, maybe better.  Fairways are well grassed, but cut to allow good run.  The greens have been cored and sanded recently, and had allowed true putting with good roll and quick enough to get the ball to the hole.

The weather was kind, but only just!  All of our groups were already in the restaurant when the heavens opened.  The storm was ferocious, with a lightning show I haven’t seen since I left my hometown of Darwin, Australia.  The thunder at times was deafening.

There was another quite large group at the course to play the A & B nines and we may have had to wait an hour or more to play.  After a quick chat to the Marshal, he agreed to send our three groups from A1 and the other comp from B1.

With the course playing so well, the scores were expected to be at least to handicap, but it wasn’t to be.  Peter Sorensen did best, scoring 34 points from his 25 handicap while Len Jones stuggled at times but managed second place with 30 points.  Mogens Jensen took the final podium place one point further back.

The Green Jacket was snug on Peter, but he made it fit.  The potential “Wig” wearer wandered off to Soi Buakhow in a bold escape bid.  He will be found!

Wednesday, May 24, St. Andrews – Stableford

1st Steve Truelove (8) 36pts

2nd Gary Bolger (17) 36pts

3rd Alistair Gall (19) 34pts

On Wednesday the society visited St. Andrews 2000 to play a stableford round.  It was the first visit here for many a month and the welcome was a warm one, even though the weather was dour with humidity near 90% and heavy clouds threatening all day.

The course was in good condition though the soft fairways and two-club humidity made a long course seem even longer.  As has happened so often recently, it was another example of millionaires’ golf with hardly another player in sight all day.

Yes, scoring was a problem and in third place was Alistair Gall with 34 points.  It took a count back to decide the winner and Aussie Steve Truelove’s better back nine topped the leaderboard from compatriot Gary Bolger, both finishing with 36 points.

Elsewhere Mr Len’s abysmal putting drew the attention of M/C Phil, but the award of the dreaded wig was waived as the main contender of the day was absent.
