Sports Bag: Pattaya losing its WTA Tennis event

Dear Sir

I am very disappointed to hear that the WTA Ladies Tennis Open is no longer to be staged at the Dusit Hotel.  They have been holding the event at Dusit Hotel for many years.  I was informed by Pentangle Promotions in Bangkok that Pattaya Town Hall won’t be providing any sponsorship to the event.  Hence the event will be lost and will go to Taiwan instead.  What a shame, what a tragedy!

To lose such a wonderful seaside event of top lady tennis players in the world competing at seaside courts at Dusit Hotel makes me so sad.  I love this event and had been going for several years now.  I am at a loss as to why Pattaya officials would no longer stage such a fine event.  Perfect for Pattaya to promote the name yet alone the resort.  Yet the tournament only carried low prize money as it was a US$240,000 event which is low compared to other events.

Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova holds up the trophy after winning the 2015 PTT Pattaya Women’s Open.

Why has Pattaya Town Hall allowed the event to be lost ?  It was wonderful advertising and promotion for Pattaya.  I am so disappointed.

Yours sincerely Ray Huss

Ed’s Note: Pattaya Mail has also been in contact with Pentangle Promotions and has received confirmation that the tournament will indeed be moved to Taiwan next year due to a lack of sponsorship funding and support for the 2016 event. This currently leaves Thailand without a major men’s or women’s tennis event on the ATP calendar.
