Near Pins: Mark Stanley, Keith Norman, Neil Carter (2).
The first round of the Bunker Boys Annual Club Championship was held at Khao Kheow Country Club under blue skies in extremely hot conditions. A total of twenty-two golfers participated on a course that was in its usual excellent condition.
The day was full of highs and lows, unfortunately, more lows than highs. Among the lows were nines from Darryl Vernon and Geoff Parker, a ten from Les Cobban, but the Bradman prize went to outgoing champion Ken Davidson who lost seven balls on C1 to run up a score of seventeen and end his chances of defending his title, golf can be a cruel game at times.
Among the highs were two near pins to Neil Carter, one being an ace. (In the past, Neil has come very close to a hole in one on several occasions and today he finally did the business on A5).
The other highlight was a sparkling net sixty-eight from Mark Stanley which put him firmly in control of the competition. A full six strokes back were a group of four, all on net seventy-four, who had to be separated on countback. In order they were Michael Brett, Keith Norman, Daryl Vernon, and Neil Carter.
Wednesday, Dec. 5, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
1st Kob Glover (30) 41pts
2nd Michael Brett (14) 36pts
3rd Keith Norman (14) 34pts
What an interesting and unusual week. On Monday we had our first “hole in one” in a year, and today our only lady member Kob Glover blew away allcomers with a sensational round of forty-one points to take first place.
A smaller than expected field of only fourteen (very low for this time of year) took part in blazing sunshine. Once again the high temperature took its toll on all, in particular, Keith Hemmings who became a bit ill but struggled manfully to the finish and also Tony Scambler even with a cart struggled to the eighteenth.
Apart from Kob, scores were modest with Michael Brett taking second on thirty-six, and Keith Norman a further two back in third.
Despite there being fourteen golfers only two near pins were claimed, one each to Keith Hemming and Neil Carter.
Friday, Dec. 7,
Treasure Hill – Medal
1st Mark Stanley 139 net total
2nd Neil Carter 148 net
3rd Keith Norman 149 net
With a brilliant display of consistent controlled golf over two days, Mark Stanley is our new club champion. Having set a cracking pace on Monday, Mark went into today’s round at Treasure Hill with a lead of six strokes. Showing great all-around golf skill, composure, and good course management Mark built on his lead to end up winning by a margin of nine strokes, the biggest winning margin for some time. In particular, his course management skill was a lesson for all others, any time he got in trouble during his round he managed to get back out of trouble with minimum damage to his score.
In a distant second, Neil Carter battled hard but lost ground to Mark while Keith Norman took third place a stroke further back.
