The Lewiinski’s Open continues to grow in popularity for the curios; the format is to play all four rounds on the tacit home course Green Valley. The first two days are stroke play, with the top fifty percent and ties going on to play day three and four of stroke play. Those who feel the lash of the cut line clean their slate and play a two-day stableford comp for the Plate.
(L-R) Nick Ordnoral, Bruce Anderson and Dave Stockman.
Last year witnessed a stirring battle between Clinton Haslet and Eddy ‘the Eagle’, with Clinton just piping Eddy at the post. The story this year was no less compelling but for different reasons.
On the golfing side, day one was the near Tigeresque dominance of Dave Stockman who found himself six shots clear with his masterpiece gross 68 (net 61) – a round that contained just 19 putts. Dave was six strokes clear of Scotland’s Buckie boy Sugar Robinson in A Flight and the Paul Shaw net 68 and the same clear of C Flight’s top man Aiden Murray. Paul Shaw’s net 68 and Richard Fearby’s net 69 completed the A Flight podium.
Aussie starlet Lou ‘Zig-zag’ followed Aiden up the C Flight steps with a net 71 but needed the aid of a count back to edge Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Roche. Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick tided up the flight with a steady net 71.
‘The Donkey’ was tops in B Flight with a count back victory over Ian Pickles, both with net 71. Eddy ‘the Eagle’ kept his eye on things as he swooped in for the bronze, with young Pat Regan closing the flight with a net 73.
Seven 2’s were recorded.
Monday, Feb. 23, Greenwood B & C – Stableford
A Flight
1st Matt Cronin (15) 34pts
2nd Dominic Downey (12) 33pts
B Flight
1st Christy Knight (22) 37pts
2nd John Hartigan (25) 37pts
It was a rest day from the Lewiinski’s Open, but a comp was thrown together for those who were not playing in it and those that thought they needed the practice. A small but talented group made the journey to play Greenwood and they found the course in fine condition with a little breeze.
B Flight provided the day’s top scorers and the men they sent to do it was the Irish pair of Christy ‘good’ Knight and John Hartigan, both tied on 37 points; as is usual in this situation Christy used all his guile and treachery to edge John for the top spot.
A Flight was a bit tame as the 34 points of Matt Cronin took the top podium spot. Fellow Mick Dominic Downey was a shot adrift for the silver, I think St. Pats day must be just around the corner.
Kevin Lacy slotted home the only 2 of the day.
Tuesday, Feb. 24, Green Valley – Open Championship

2nd Connie Walsh (13) net 69
3rd Paul Smith (3) net 69
4th Dave Palmer (13) net71
B Flight
1st John Warren (19) net 66
2nd Adam Barton (14) net 70
3rd Pat Regan (14) net 71
4th Mark Bonner (17) net72
C Flight
1st Lou Szigligeti (22) net 67
2nd Peter Henshaw (26) net 68
3rd Marcus Earp (35) net 72
4th Martin Allard (23) net73
Back to the second day of the Lewiinski’s Open and Dave Stockman carried on with his magical scoring as he notched a third best score of the day, a net 68, to top A Flight. Irishman Connie Walsh took the silver after gaining a count back verdict over Paul Smith, both with fine net 69’s. Dave Palmer’s net 71 was good for the fourth podium spot.
John Warren is not the biggest guy in the field by any stretch of the imagination but he was the best today as he carded a sparkling net 66 to top B Flight. John was four clear of Adam Barton and a further shot clear of Ireland’s Pat Regan. Mark ‘Taxi’ Bonner, a past winner I might add, took the fourth podium spot as he edged Jimmy ‘AK47’ Bell on count back, both locked on net72’s.
Standing atop the C Flight podium was rising Aussie star Lou ‘Zig-zag’ with a fine net 67 and he was closely followed by Irishman Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw a stroke adrift. Marcus Earp shot a steady net 72 for the bronze as Martin Allard out-pointed Bernard Green for the fourth place, both with net 73’s.
Seven 2’s were recorded.
Wednesday, Feb. 25, Silky Oak – Stableford
A Flight
1st Jeff Hosfield (15) 36pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (14) 31pts
3rd Jeff Acheson (9) 28pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 43pts
2nd Colin Davis (18) 38pts
3rd Lou Szigligeti (22) 34pts
Another day off from the Open saw a fair sized crowd head off to Silky Oak. Mike Jefferys, who has seen his handicap climb as of late, signaled he may have solved the plot by shooting a dazzling 43 points for the top spot in B Flight and top score on the day. Mike was followed into the barn by ‘The Donkey’ with a steady 38 points while good mate Lou ‘Zig-zag’ closed the flight on 34.
A Flight was very confusing as the top score was non- member Pat Duane with 37 points. Jeff Horsfield took the gold with an even par pound while Terry Pettit (36), Liam Hannerty (32) and Luke Glyn (31) were all non-members also. This left Jeff Acheson, with a mere 28 points, to round out the flight.
Pat Duane, Mike Jefferys, Colin Davis and Lou Szigligeti shared the 2’s pot.
Thursday, Feb. 26, Green Valley – Open Championship
A Flight – Medal
1st JP Maffray (13) net 71
2nd Bruce Anderson (10) net 22
B Flight – Medal
1st Adam Barton (14) net 68
2nd Lou Szigligeti (22) net 70
A Flight – S/ford
1st Garry Blackburn (8) 38pts

3rd Thierry Petrement (13) 35pts
B Flight – S/ford
1st Jim Elphick (28) 39pts
2nd Hans Moerk (20) 37pts
3rd Peter Terry (20) 36pts
Day three saw the Aussie gas pedal pressed down a bit harder as a third subpar round, this time a net 70, saw the gap close to three strokes over the always Open tough Dave Stockman. But it was still Dave’s to win or lose.
The best rounds on the day were Adam Barton’s net 68 and Lou ‘Zig-zag’ with a net 70. The standings going into the final day on Sunday was Dave Stockman 204, Lou Zigzag 207, Paul Smith 215, and Connie Walsh 216.
There was plenty of action for those not in the hunt for the big prize as 36 players who missed the cut or who elected to drop down battled it out for the Plate. Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick led the way with a very good 39 points followed by nice guy Garry Blackburn, who is a past Open winner with 38 points. Lawrie McBride, Peter Terry and Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Roche were all at even par.
Friday, Feb. 27, Crystal Bay B & A – Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Hynard (14) 39ts
2nd Takashi Hakozaki (14) 35pts
3rd Jeff Hosfield (15) 29pts
B Flight
1st Mike O’Brien (22) 42pts
2nd Mike Jefferys (18) 35pts
3rd Goran Asp (24) 35pts
The size of the field might have been impacted by the lads having a break from the Lewiinski’s Open, but the quality of play was certainly not affected. Mike O’Brian stole the show and the top step in B Flight with a sizzling 42 points. Liam Rafferty chased Mike home with a splendid 40 points but sadly is not a member. A classic matchup was a foot as both Mike ‘the Welsh Dragon Jefferys and Goran Asp effectively garnered a podium position, both on 35 points, while adding 0.1 to their handicap. It is a thing of beauty to watch.
On the accomplished side, A Flight’s Peter ‘fluent in Thai’ Hynard stood atop the podium with a fine 39 points. Non-member Pat Dunne shot 40 points for zilch, much to the delight of Takashi Hakozaki san with his35 points. Liam Hanniford got a mention in dispatches for his 34 points but that’s all. Jeff Hosfield was left to round out the flight with33.
Pat Dunne and Jeff Hosfield split the 2’s pot.
