Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Oct. 17, Plutaluang – Stableford
Heavy overnight rain yet again here in Jomtien but there were no cancellations and everyone turned up at Frasers bang on time for the trip to Plutaluang.
We played the North and West nines today with five groups out and the cut set at 8-17 in division 1 and 18 plus in division 2. It was a tough test out there today with some slick greens and the semi rough very thick and coarse.
Two 36’s won both divisions, Pete Sumner topping division 1 while Paul Butler finished in second place two points behind and Jerry Sweetnam was third with 32. The
Durham boy John Hughes won division 2 with his even par round, two up on Tom Novak in second with 34 and Bob Poole took third with 33.
Near pins went to (Div 1) Don Mumford and Pete Sumner (2), and (Div 2) Curtis Hessler, John Hughes and Tom Novak.
Amazingly there were three ‘2’s on the lighthouse hole today – Paul Butler with a rollover in division 1 was a happy chappy and Don Head and Curtis Hessler in division 2 also birdied it. Tom Novak made a ‘2’ hole W3 as well.
Wednesday, Oct. 19, Pattana – Stableford
Upon arrival here at Pattana the C course was shut for green renovation so we were playing the A and B nines. The course was in great condition and everyone rated it highly.
An 11-16 cut today in the two divisions and Don Head recorded the best score of the day, winning division 2 with 37 points. Magne Gunnarson came in second with 35 points and Mike Kendall was third with 34.
South Africa’s Jerry Sweetnam beat Dave Horne on a 17/15 back-nine count back for top spot in division 1 after they both came in with 31 points each. Dennis Scougall took third with 30 points.
Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Terry Madsen, Dennis Scougall and Jerry Sweetnam (2), and (Div 2) Marty Aronson, Mike Kendall and Don Head.
Terry Madsen in division 1 birdied A8 and Curtis Hessler in division 2 chipped in from off the green on B7 for the only ‘2’s of the day.
Friday, Oct. 21, Eastern Star – Stableford
Only two divisions out today with the handicaps set at 8-16 in the top flight and playing off 14, Brian Green won division 1 with 34 points. Just back from his UK trip, Sid Crawley filled second place after beating Jerry Sweetnam 15/13 on a back-nine count back, both scoring 31 points.
Bruce Gardner with 33 points won division 2, with Frank Kelly in second place one point behind and five points behind that was Juergen Heinzius in third place, beating Colin Aspinall on a 16/15 count back.
Near pins went to (Div 1) Paul Butler, Dennis Scougall, Pete Sumner and Jerry Sweetnam, and (Div 2) Tony Thorne (2).
Paul Butler sank his putt on the 13th for a ‘2’ but Jerry Sweetnam was already happy after a birdie on the 3rd. There were no ‘2’s in division 2.
