The Golf Club weekly review
Monday, August 28, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Andy Makara (31) 37pts
T2nd Fred Birch (15) 36pts
T2nd Steve Sweeney (19) 36pts
By all appearances it finally appears that we are getting our course back! The fairways are nearly back to being fair and the fast greens are a good indicator of progress made.
It was a very close comp today with only a shot to spare for victory. Freddy Birch and Steve Sweeney battled it out all day to equal their handicaps at the 36 mark but Andy Makara beat them by just a shot for the win.
Our “new best friend” Rob Knight was winding down his Pattaya tour and before he headed back to Oz he got our Caddy Smile near pin for a nice finish.
Tuesday, August 29, Laem Chabang A & B (white tees) – Stableford
1st Simon Kendall (13) 41pts
2nd Rob Knight (13) 34pts
3rd Steve Sweeney (19) 32pts
Simon’s back! Good to see Mr. Kendall on the mend from the woes of a bad back and shooting so well on his first outing this trip with us.
To play Laem Chabang and to see her in such great condition today was a beautiful thing. To play the course very well made the day just that extra special for Simon and it was great to see him grasp control of this lovely Jack Nicklaus course for a spectacular day of golf.
Our buddy Richie McGhee made an appearance in spite of a flu bug in the system for our near pin reward. Rob Knight and Steve Sweeney were too far back to contend, but still good enough to be in the prizes again.
Thursday, August 31, Pattavia (white tees) – Stableford
1st Jim Brackett (6) 35pts
2nd Richie McGhee (1) 30pts
3rd Simon Kendall (13) 29pts
The area here has been getting loads of rain of late, but this hardy course was in brilliant nick. We had a good showing of 16 golfers today and as it turned out, there were no blokes that beat their handicap!
Cardinals’ fan Jimmy Brackett was the star of the day and stuffed the rest by a 5 shot margin… sounds like a tough day at the office. Single handicapper Richie McGhee (no relation to Bobby) turned in a frustrating 30 on the card but ahead of Tuesday’s winner Simon Kendall on 29. Hey Richie, at least Simon got that near pin!
Friday, Sept. 1,
Khao Kheow A & C (white tees) – Stableford
1st Steve Sweeney (19) 35pts
T2nd Phil Smedley (12) 34pts
T2nd Jim Brackett (6) 34pts
For a golf course as wet as we played today, there were lots of newbies who still raved about this track. Hence, the decision was rightly made to go for the front tees with ‘lift, clean and place’ in the fairways, and as seen in the scoring, it was a right decision.
Seems like the usual suspects were out there again in a three horse race. Jim and Capt. Phil did well enough, but it was that smooth swingin’ Sweeney that kicked butt of a decent 12-man race.
