Monday, March 7, The Emerald – Stableford

We know the crowds are dwindling but we arrived here to an almost empty car park and the first group teed off 25 minutes ahead of schedule.  The cut today was 6-16 in division 1 and 17+ in the second flight.  The greens here today were very slow and the course is still improving slowly.

Terry Madsen.

South African boy Jerry Sweetnam topped the first division with 39 points, four ahead of Estonia’s Raivo Velsberg in second and then there was fight for third place on 34 points that saw Ron Miller, with 18 points on the back nine, edge out Chris Voller and Dennis Scougall.

Walter Weber was the winner in division 2 on 38 points and seven behind was William Chang who beat Harry Vincenzi 19/16 on a back-nine count back.

Near pins went to (Div 1) Hannu, Toni Stoltsen, Raivo Velsberg and Chris Voller, and (Div 2) Harry Vincenzi and Walter Weber (3).

Raivo birdied the 5th and Hannu the 15th to scoop the rollover ‘2’s pool in the top flight while in division 2 there was a carryover to Treasure Hill on Wednesday.

Wednesday, March 9, Treasure Hill – Stableford

We thought Monday was quiet but we have never seen this course as deserted as it was today.  We stood on the first tee and could not see anybody on the course at all so we got off 30 minutes ahead of time.  Playing off the yellow tees here as normal it was a tough test of golf with excellent greens and very slick pace.

Raivo Velsberg and Harry Vincenzi.

Two divisions out today with the cut at 8-16 and 17+ and Terry Madsen bounced back to win division 1 with 37 points.  Chris Voller rolled in second on 35 and the bandit Jerry McCarthy was third with a measly 34 points.

William Chang was on the podium again, winning division 2 with 33 points and Vio Serban beat Ray Thirtle to second spot on a 19/15 count back after they both came in with 32 points each.

Near Pins were claimed by (Div 1) Jerry McCarthy (3) and Dennis Scougall, and (Div 2) Gerry Cooke (2).

Terry Madsen birdied the 13th and Jerry McCarthy the 6th to share the ‘2’s in division 1 and in the second flight there was another rollover to Pattana on Monday.

Friday, March 11, Eastern Star – Stableford

After a few phone calls from our Thai members the new system starting here on the first of April has been dropped.  It meant we could only tee off from 6.00am to 8.30am on the 1st or the 10th or teeing off at 11.30 on both tees, which obviously is not suitable for our game.  We will be talking to the management soon regarding all of our future fixtures here as we are not happy with these starting times.

Out in the course there were many GUR circles on the approaches and on the fairways and we couldn’t get an answer from the management as to why these areas couldn’t be watered.

Playing off handicap eleven, Ian Speirs shot 36 points today to win division 1, with Paul Hartley in second place after beating Brian Keating and Harry Vincenzi on count back, all returning 33 point scores.

Gerry Cooke and Jerry McCarthy.

Max Wilson’s 35 points won him division 2 bragging rights, with Tony Thorne beating Vio Serban for second place on an 18/13 count back after they both came in with 34 points each.

Near pins went to (Div 1) Colin Aspinall, Bill Bertram, Ian Speirs and Chris Voller, and (Div 2) Tony Thorne.

Ian Speirs birdied the 3rd for the only ‘2’ of the day.
