Tewin sends the Aussies packing

The weather was a big factor this past week and with the mercury continuing to rise to almost unbearable levels the sensible visitors to Pattaya were heading for the swimming pool or beach to cool down a little.  Of course golfers are not sensible, they are like the mad dogs and Englishmen who go out in the midday sun, completely bonkers.  Even the regular golfers who live here all year round were beginning to doubt their own sanity, walking around in that heat it was like hiking across the Sahara with an umbrella.

Monday, March 30, Khao Kheow – Stableford

On Monday the largest contingent of the week headed across to play Khao Kheow (B and C courses).  The numbers, still boosted by the previous week’s runaway Aussies, set about the course with gusto but only one golfer, Tewin Poopay Lamthong, managed to play better than her handicap and it was she who swept up in Division 1.  Tewin amassed 38 points and smiled benignly as she collected first prize knowing she had cleaned out her Aussie playing partners on the side wagers.

Second and third places were both taken by our Aussie visitors; Max Scott just got the better of John Goudge to finish second and I hope the prize money was enough to go towards new shirts which they seemed to have lost on the golf course.

In Division 2 it was a Geordie, Brendan Abbott, who took the day and he won it easily.  He finished five points ahead of Jimmy Graham in second and Paul Kruining was a further shot back in third.

Div.1 (0-12)

1st Tewin Lamthong (12) 38pts

2nd Max Scott (4) 35pts

3rd John Goudge (7) 34pts

Div.2 (13+)

1st Brendon Abbott (24) 35pts

2nd Jimmy Graham (17) 30pts

3rd Paul Kruining (28) 29pts

Tuesday, March 31, Pattavia – Stableford

Even hotter weather greeted us on Tuesday as we drove into Pattavia Century to once again do battle with those slick greens.  Now I have been critical here in the past where it became usual to arrive at a green in regulation and to then four putt or even worse through no real fault of our own.  However, we found that the torrential downpour of the previous week had slowed everything down and it was a real pleasure to play the course and everybody had a better day.

The winning scores all backed up what I have said, with Brendan Abbott having a second good day in a row to win out on a count back over Paul Kruining.  Monday’s Division 1 winner Tewin Poopay Lamthong shot a second 38-pointer but this time had to settle for third place.  Her Aussie playing partners this time seemed to have lost their pants as well as their shirts somewhere around the course.

1st Brendon Abbott (24) 39pts

2nd Paul Kruining (28) 39pts

3rd Tewin Lamthong (11) 38pts

Thursday, April 2, Phoenix – Stableford

On Thursday it was the turn of Phoenix (Ocean and Mountain courses) to play host to the TRGG.  Our Aussie visitors had by now departed, last seen rowing a small boat back to Australia seemingly having lost all their money, shirts and pants and couldn’t afford a flight home.  In other news Poopay has announced she is opening up her new airline shortly.

Brendan Abbott & Derek Thorogood.

Anyway, back to our day at Phoenix where Derek Thorogood, our resident Aussie, took over the role of bandit for the day by amassing 38 points which was six better than anybody else.  Well done Derek, good effort.  Paul Stanton slotted into second place and Tim Dalton got the better of a number of other golfers on count back after they all finished on 31 points.

1st Derek Thorogood (14) 38pts

2nd Paul Stanton (13) 32pts

3rd Tim Dalton (17) 31pts

Saturday, April 4, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

There was a change of schedule on Saturday and Mountain Shadow was called into play.  I can only assume that the weather had finally taken its toll on our golfers because only a handful turned up to play.  It was Fergus Brennan who came out on top in a very close finish as Paul Stanton only just lost out on count back and Pierre Cere was a point behind in third.

1st Fergus Brennan (12) 33pts

2nd Paul Stanton (13) 33pts

3rd Pierre Cere (10) 32pts

Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.
