PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, October 24, Khao Kheow – Stableford

A smaller than usual field on the C & A nines but at last it’s a pleasure to report that the work that has been done on this course over the past months is beginning to pay off, and it does look as though we could be in for an excellent high season here, with some very special rates.

Rod Crosswell and Owen Walkley shared the spoils, both scoring 40 points, only for Owen to lose on count back.  Back in third was Dennis Pelly on 38 and it was a long way back to find the fourth placed man, Fidge Button.

Apparently, Norm Cheetham only played because the bus turned up for him, perhaps the score reflects that Norm!

Rod Crosswell dominated the ‘2’s scene with birdies on the A5, C3 & C8 and apparently wasn’t that far away from a clean sweep and Suzi got the only other one on hole C3.

Instead of the monthly ladder, starting in November and continuing each and every month for the next four, the Outback start two new sponsored monthly competitions.  One entails the sum of your best six stableford cards from any of Khao Kheow, Burapha or Green Valley; and is sponsored by Big Mango Properties.  The other is an eclectic at Pattaya County Club, rounds that will count include Turnip’s Monday, the regular Tuesday and the Chad organised Friday round.  This competition is sponsored by De Vere, “for independent financial advice, wherever you are”. For further details and entry fees please see The General at the bar.

2nd Owen Walkley (10/Hi9.7) 40pts

Tuesday, October 25, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

A very good turnout today, with 26 Outbackers giving it their best shot.  The course was looking really good and in great shape and apart from a serious looking storm that had more huff and puff than substance, it was another excellent day at the office.

Quite remarkably, the scoring was only average with Billy’s 35 points being enough to win Div A from Paul Greenaway (34) and Jim Smith, also on 34.  Div B went to Dave B with 37 points, on a fleeting visit; beating Laong on count back 23 points to 20 on the back nine.

Watch out for the Outback’s new monthly sponsored eclectic here at Pattaya C.C., which will start on 1st November, see Chad or the General for entry details.

There were only two ‘2’s from Steve Milne on hole 16 and Mark Riggall on hole 12.

Wednesday, October 26, Burapha – Stableford

Playing C and D off the white tees was a pleasure today as the course was dry but without a great deal of run but in good condition.  The greens were like lightning, hard but true, and all the rough had been mown recently.  Thankfully it was the last sports day so hopefully no more 5-balls out the front, however 28 golfers played and we were still all round in about 4 hours.

Next week will see the start of the high season and the rates will go up a little but not dramatically both here and the other courses we play.  I think here goes up by 300 baht and the caddie fee also goes up a little.  Khao Kheow goes up by 100 baht and their caddie fee also goes up plus the cost of a shared cart goes to 700 baht; the cost of a cart on your own remains unchanged.  At Green Valley, the rate is unchanged.

Welcome back to John Sarcasmo, Gary Ralph, Bobby Chiofalo and Tony Glidden friends from the land of Aus and goodbye to Fidge Button, who’s got to go back to do a bit of work, and by the way, thanks for your help as fines-master in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.

Poor Chris Sloan caught a bit of what General Jack had up in Chiang Mai.  He was a little on the second hand side by the time he finished being sick even in the car park, but he still managed to win division A with a fantastic score of 39 points, the best of the day.

Other notables include Owen Walkley (36pts), 2nd Div A; George Bishop (34pts), 2nd Div B and John O’Keefe (34pts), 2nd in Div C.

There were five ‘2’s today from Owen Walkley on hole C5, Jim Brackett, Rod Crosswell & Chris Sloan on C8 and Rod Crosswell again on hole D8.  And just in case you haven’t noticed that’s a total of five ‘2’s that Rod Crosswell has had in his last two round of golf.

Div A (0-10)

1st Chris Sloan (7/Hi6.9) 39pts

2nd Owen Walkley (9/Hi8.9) 36pts

3rd John Oswald (10) 35pts

Div B (11-15)

1st Norm Cheetham (15/Hi14.2) 36pts

2nd George Bishop (14) 34pts

3rd Chris Fletcher (12/Hi11.8) 33pts

Div C (16+)

1st John Sarcasmo (20/Hi19.5) 36pts

2nd John O’Keefe (16/Hi15.9) 34pts

3rd Bob Chiofalo (21/Hi20.5) 33pts

Friday, October 28, Phoenix – Thai Garden Resort Cup

The 4th Annual Thai Garden Resort Cup between the Outback Golf Bar and the German Swiss Golf Club was held Friday at Phoenix, with the evening festivities once again at The Moon River Pub.

A field of 60 players, thirty teams of two, were lining up to wage fair battle in a mathematical scoring exercise in a new format dreamt up by the General, as the German Swiss side were looking to avenge their defeat from last year.  So what was it?

A rainbow multiplier matchplay; six red, six white and six blue from each player on each team, then multiply one team player’s score by his partner’s, then write down the result of the sum:- whichever team had the highest number of points on the hole, won that hole and so on, on a hole by hole basis, and of course everybody knows that any number multiplied by zero, is zero – now you all know that don’t you, unless of course it’s your client’s account!

With a 10.32 first tee off time and even with everybody away by 12.10, it was still very late in the day before the final result was known; Capt’ Bob who had been collating the scores at Phoenix, left around 5.20 p.m., with two teams still to come in and at that moment in time, the match stood all square 61/2 each.

Pattaya was under siege again with the mass exodus from Bangkok so getting to the Moon River Pub for 7 p.m. proved somewhat difficult with the German Swiss co-ordinator, Helmut Wolf taking two hours to get there from Phoenix and Capt’ Bob had given up the ghost using four wheels and hopped on a motorbike taxi, which seemed to be the only way to beat the invasion.  It was not until around 8 p.m. before the final two match scores came in, and the near pins also arrived, so General Jack & Helmut were able to proceed with a very quick presentation, prior to the band starting up.

The new format was a success and looks likely to stay for next year and even though the German Swiss got a lot closer than last year, they didn’t quite do enough, with the Outback winning the last two matches, to take the match 81/2 to 61/2 and ironically enough one of those wins featured two Germans playing for the Outback! He! He!  That will teach you guys to adopt a Scotsman as a German.

There were also prizes for the day’s top scores with the first prize going to the German Swiss pairing of Juerg Becker & Hans Pickartz who amassed 79 points, ahead of Joe Mooneyham & Steve Mann in second on 78, Neil Lavery & Sugar took third with 75; following in fourth place was another German Swiss pairing, Zion Asaban & Reto Wahrenberger (74) and finally in fifth, John O’Keefe & Owen Lloyd (71).  Note a full list of the day’s results can be found on the Outback website at www.outbackgolfbar.com.

Near pin prizes were awarded to Werner Reinhart on Ocean 5, Owen Lloyd on Ocean 7, Joe Mooneyham on Mountain 4 and Jean Paul Michiels on Mountain 8.

It was another great fun day out; our thanks to the Thai Garden Resort, not only for the evening and the excellent buffet but also to the 500 baht vouchers to be presented to all the winning pairings; if you haven’t got your voucher yet, hassle either Jack or Helmut.

See you next year!
