It is always tough to lose a count back. It is always tough not to win when you have 42 points. Well it happened to Aussie Lou ‘Zig-zag’ in B Flight today as he was left with second place behind Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Bielby.
Sunday’s top two: Eddy Bielby (left) with Lou Szigligeti.
After the first nine it was looking more likely that Lou would take the win as he scored 24 points to Eddy’s 16. But we all know never to ruffle the Eagle’s feathers and so it was to be as Eddy came back on the back nine in a personal best ever 26 points (gross 35)off his 18 handicap.
Jimmy ‘AK47’ Bell carded a very impressive 39 points for the third podium spot, as Phil ‘the Welsh wonder’ Davies closed the flight with a steady 37 points but needed the aid of a count back decision over the unlucky Peter Terry.
A count back was also required to separate Chris Martin and Irishman Pat Regan, both with a rock solid 39 points in A Flight but the luck of the Irish deserted Pat as Chris picked up the gold. Adam Barton took the flight bronze with a very creditable 38 points while podium specialist Peter LeNoury rounded out the flight with 37 points
Gerry Hughes took the laurels in C Flight with 39 points while a trio of players vied for the minor flight spots; James Drabeck, Irishman Pat Feeney and his good mate John O’Neill all knotted on 34 points. When the knot was untied it was James who emerged with the silver and Pat the bronze, leaving John to tidy up the flight.

2nd Paul Bray (8) 38pts
3rd Reg MacKay (14) 38pts
B Flight
1st Ken Hole (19) 37pts
2nd Robert Baird (24) 36pts
3rd Peter Wallace (19) 35pts
Pleasant Valley is a short course but very challenging. A trio of players vied for the top spot in A Flight, all with 38 points, and the ensuing count back dictated that Co. Callaway’s Dominic Downey took the gold with his inner nine score of 22 points. Aussie star Paul Bray received the silver as he came up two shots shy and Scotland’s Buckie boy Reg MacKay closed the flight podium a shot adrift of Paul.
The laurels in B Flight belonged to Ken Hole with his 37 points. Trailing Ken up the podium steps was Robert Baird with a even par round while Golf Director Peter Wallace tided up the flight with 35 points.
Wednesday, Deb. 3, Plutaluang N & W – Stableford
A Flight
1st Raymond Crosthwaite (17) 45pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (11) 36pts
3rd Ajit Amin (16) 35pts
B Flight
1st Steve Doris (22) 40pts
2nd Gerard Lambert (24) 37pts
3rd Ken Hole (19) 36pts
The first Wednesday in February saw a good turnout gather at Plutaluang Navy course N & W layouts for a stableford comp. The course was very well presented and in fine condition.
The scoring in both flights was very good considering the heat and humidity. The star of the day was Raymond Crosthwaite who posted a flawless 45 points for the top spot in A Flight and take the man off the match honours. Raymond was a massive nine strokes clear of second placed Thierry ‘nice Guy’ Petrement. Ajit Amin took the third spot in A Flight but first he had to beat Co. Callaway’s Dominic Downey on count back, both tied on 35 points.
Top of the heap in B Flight was Steve Doris with a sparkling 40 points. Steve was three strokes clear of Gerard Lambert and a further shot clear of Ken Hole who made it two pay window visits this week.
Friday, Fe. 5, Burapha C & D – Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Bray (8) 37pts
2nd Pen Caruthers (15) 34pts
3rd Chris Barret (16) 34pts
B Flight
1st Thierry Temime (23) 39pts
2nd Tiziano Dal Pastro (27) 37pts
3rd Tom Morrisroe (24) 34pts
Burapha C & D was the test today and as always the course was in excellent condition.
Thierry Temime took the laurels in B Flight and was man of the match with a very good 39 points. It had to be good because his B Flight friend Tiziano Dal Pastro was but just two strokes back in second. Tom Morrisroe and Robert Braid were locked in mortal combat on 34 points apiece for the third podium spot and when the divots had settled it was Tom who got to fill his boots, leaving Robert you know where and potless.
Skipping up to the senior flight it was no surprise to see Aussie star Paul Bray standing atop of the podium with a fine 37 points. Chris Barret had to settle for the third podium step after Pen Caruthers defeated him in a count back, both with 34 points.
