Phoenix Tuesday Golf Group
After the wind battering day we had the previous Friday at Khao Kheow with my old mate Derek Brook (Chairman of the British Legion Pattaya) holding the Remembrance Day Golf Tournament, it was nice to get back to some kinder weather conditions this Tuesday. I think it could be said for all participants on Friday that it has been a long time since they played golf in such windy conditions (except for the hardened Irish and Scottish links players amongst us). It was also a great pity the course was in such poor condition, especially the fairways. It was considered by most that winter rules should have been implemented.
On behalf of all our players who attended I would like to applaud Derek for the superb day which is for such a good cause. With a field of 136 players he made sure the day was very successful. (Presentation dragged on a bit though (too much Guinness).
Tuesday’s top three stand back row with the staff at the Relax Bar.
Back to our Tuesday game where we tackled the Lake/Ocean course. I also have to say what a pleasure it was to get back to such superb fairways, and tees and greens, exceptional for this time of the year.
After a terrible front nine of only 13 points, yours truly took the honours today with a super back nine of 25 points (don’t know what happened, if only we hackers could do it for 18 holes) to register 38 points in all. In joint first place (but with a lesser back nine) was Shaun Merriman and in third place was the ever reliable Hugh Byrne, with 37 points.
Back at the Relax Bar we supped our first drink (free, out of the days takings, thus making sure that anyone who comes back to the presentation gets some of their investment back).
After this the remainder was split up to cover the near pins first which went to Shaun Merriman (2) and Phil Kington. With one not being claimed it went to a lucky draw which was won by Richard Baldwin.
The two lucky draw prizes (donated by the Relax Bar) of a free massage and free drink went to John Stafford and Patrick Browne respectively.
For existing participants, and future ones, please try and get to the registration a little earlier at this time of the year. After 11.30 a.m. places cannot be guaranteed if we have an abundance of players attending. Communication is the best answer to make sure of your place (by telephone call only!)
Anyone new wishing to join in with our little group will be more than welcome as long as they have any official handicap (although we only allow 28 maximum on the day) and are prepared to play the game strictly to the rules but with a lot of fun and banter.
Non Phoenix members can enjoy a green fee rate of only 1,000 baht as long as they inform the Phoenix office they are with the group.
