Friday, Feb. 13, Phoenix (Lakes & Ocean) – Stableford

This was the first of our “Fridays at Phoenix” competition days after successful talks with the management and owners, which resulted in very attractive green fee rates for both high & low season.  Once the word got out the interest was high and we ended up with a very good field for this first day.

Our tee time was 10.00 am and we got away pretty much on time with Lakes & Ocean nines being the designated combination.  The weather was very good although overcast at times and this fine golf course was in excellent condition.  It was a fairly speedy round as there was very little traffic ahead and we were finished in not much more than four hours.

After seventeen holes Thierry had 34 points and Terry had 37 points, so of course Terry was the favourite but guess what? – Thierry made a three-pointer on the last and Terry wiped it to leave both tied on 37 points with Thierry winning on a count back.

In third place came Andre Fortis with a steady 36 points and with two golfers on 35 points the resultant count back saw Freddy Starbeck finish fourth, with Garry Hookey just missing out.

Monday, Feb. 16, Pleasant Valley – Stableford

We had a healthy turnout today and although the course was quite busy our first group teed off right on time at 10.35 am.  The course was looking very good with the greens a bit slower than normal but all in all conditions were excellent and the round was finished in just over four hours.

Once again it was Christian Boysen who led the way and captured first place with a fine 38 points and veteran Ted Morris came second one point further back.  Our old friend Takeshi Hakozaki was third on 36 points and Andrew Woodall finished fourth with 35.

Friday, Feb. 20, Phoenix (Lakes & Ocean) – Stableford

We had a fabulous turnout for our second “Fridays at Phoenix” competition with 12 groups on the starting sheet and a late tee time of 11.52 am seemed to suit many of them.  Lakes & Ocean were once more the allocated nines and the first group teed off on Lakes 1 just about right on time.

There was apparently a rain forecast but fortunately it stayed away from Phoenix and the weather was quite pleasant with the golf course as usual in tip top shape.  There were no major delays despite the large number of players and the rounds were mostly completed in around four hours and twenty five minutes.

Andy Purdie was the winner in A Flight with an excellent 41 points, 3 points ahead of Francis Goyens in second spot and that man Christian Boysen was third with 37.  In fourth place came Huw Phillips on 36 and Bill Hewitt finished fifth with 35.

B Flight was well won by the in-form Andre Fortis who carded 39 points and in a count back for second and third with two golfers on 36 points it was Gary Williams (25 point back nine) who edged out Jim Lanzo (23 point back nine).  Samorn Tanamsri finished fourth with 34 points and another count back saw Maurice Goyons (17 point back nine) grab fifth place from Nick Shaw (16 point back nine) with both on 33.
