T3rd Jack Grindvold (3) 36pts
T3rd Nate Welchert (12) 36pts
T3rd Mashi Kaneta (14) 36pts
A victorious Alan Rothwell.
That was the week that was. Our minds were certainly distracted this past week with the biggest PGA tournament in Thailand, the Thailand Golf Championships being held just up the road near Chonburi.
Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Sergio Garcia, Jamie Donaldson, Darren Clarke, Bubba Watson and our local Thai superstars were all at Amata Spring Golf Club. The event provided an opportunity for an up close and personal viewing of some of the world’s greatest players and legends. From The Golf Club we had about a dozen of our crew volunteer to marshall the course and provide assistance to this fantastic Amata Spring tournament.
It was a multinational tournament that also drew Thomas Bjorn, Matthew Fitzpatrick (or was that Shane Ruddle?) and many more Asian and European greats at this co-sanctioned event.
If you have never attended a professional golf tournament, it is a thing to behold. You really have to be there to appreciate how this is a much different game to what we play, from the sound of the shots to the ceremony of it all.
Back to the reality of society golf in Pattaya! The Green Valley Gang was at it again and the scores were impressive. Three ties at 36 for third, Mark Wood took sole second with a 37 and first place went to Alan Rothwell again, who won here the previous week. This was Alan’s best round in Thailand ever, handicap considered, so his game is just getting better.
Wednesday, Dec. 9, Pattaya C.C. (white tees) – Stableford
1st Kenny Aihara (4) 35pts
2nd Fred Graham (16) 34pts
T3rd Alan Rothwell (5) 33pts
T3rd Barry Murnin (20) 33pts
T3rd Herbert Stel (18) 33pts
It had been a long time since we last visited Pattaya Country Club, but comments were on the favourable side all things considered. This course was in pretty good condition, greens were on the slow side but at least they were consistent. We all like the layout and the new clubhouse is now one of the best Pattaya has to offer. It is certainly the most unique design!
All the girls love a winner! Well done Peter Thomas.
It has been unusual not to see Mr. Aihara up on the top step of late but Kenny came good here today and his mere 35 was good enough to take the win. Kenny did not have a remarkable round, but consistent. He made few mistakes out there and that was all that was necessary.
Friday, Dec. 11, Silky Oaks (white tees) – Stableford
1st Peter Thomas (16) 43pts
2nd John Coetzee (21) 39pts
3rd Alan Rothwell (5) 38pts
Another rain free week saw us end this stretch at the lovely new Silky Oaks. Lots of applause for the condition of this course and with a price tag of THB 1,750 (all in) for the high season, many would brand this the best value in Pattaya.
On to the scoring, and it was all in a day’s work for Peter Thomas. This was the best round of his golf year and it was great to see our old mate finish with a bang. Peter had one of those magical golf days where you can do no wrong. These days are often few and far between but Peter knows to appreciate such moments and treasure the day in style. The 16 handicapper actually shot 2 over on the front and had a blob free round. In fact, the only trouble was on the 18th where he took a double bogey to finish! Great going Peter, must have been your caddy!
