Eighty-one players squared off to contest the Lewiinski’s President’s Day for 2015 at the traditional Sunday venue Green Valley.  To say that A Flight’s Tom MacManus vanquished the field is putting it lightly.  He was a tigeresque five strokes clear of the field with a brilliant gross 78, net 64.  Paul V Smith followed Tom up the podium steps with a very impressive 39 points and Les Cobban took the bronze on a count back over John Carlton, but as it was such a large turnout there was a fourth podium slot for John.

Claude Harder made himself right at home by being the best on the day in B Flight with a creditable 38 points.  Claude was three clear of. Ireland’s Tom Byrne and a further stroke clear of Phil ‘the Welsh wonder’ Davies.  The Donkey and young Pat Regan were only separated by count back, both tied on 33 points, and it was the Donkey who made the short climb to the fourth place on the B Flight stairs.

In C Flight it was Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby who was perched on the top rung with a rock solid 39 points, which was accumulated using only 15 of the 18 holes.  Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Hughes shot a fair even-par round but was relegated to third place on count back by Eddie Kelly.  The consistent Hank Terbraak rounded out the flight with 35 points.

The Red and Silver Flight laurels went to the lovely Vero Morgan with a count back success over Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick and Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer, all locked on 37 points.

George ‘one ball’ Jackson and 9 others shared the 2’s pot.

Back at Lewiinski’s Tom MacManus was presented with the lead crystal first prize while Paul V Smith was named as runner up and Eddy Beilby the second runner up.  After the presentation the new President Jez ‘Lord Lucan’ Lees gave a rousing speech, thanking Jimmy Day for all his hard work in the past year, the Lewiinski’s staff for the wonderful buffet, and the scribe for his remarkable write-ups, he also promised to spend more time with the society.

Monday, Jan. 19, Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford

2nd Ed Wyckoff (10) 31pts

B Flight

1st Pat Higney (20) 33pts

The always challenging Khao Kheow again proved to be hard to score on as no player managed to play to their handicap.  The top score of the day was in A Flight, Ian Pickles returning 34 points while Ed ‘our man in the white house’ Wyckoff was three shots in arrears for the silver.

B Flight was topped by new member Pat Higney with 33 points.  Bruce Berlin and Hank Ter Braak went to a count back, both with 30 points, and it was Bruce who filled the flight silver leaving Hank Ter at sea level and pot less.

Peter Daafern was the sole heir to the 2’s pot.

Only one player on the day broke par but he did it in fine fashion.  Paul ‘junior’ Smith, off a miserly three handicap, shot a gross 73 (net 70) to take A Flight and the man of the match honours by three strokes.  Maurice Roberts followed Paul up the podium steps to take the silver on 35 points.  Rob Blow rounded out the flight a shot back.

Gaston Oggier led B Flight with 33 points as the day saw three flights, given the huge numbers of golfers in town.  Roger Emery and Walter Baechli both had 30 point returns with the former counting back to the silver.

C Flight was won by Irishman Colm O’Donovan with a solid 35 points.  Colm was two clear of Bruce Berlin who was there thanks to the benefit of a count back over Tom Cotton.

Max Scott, Walter Baechli, Serge Straiten and Vera Morgan shared the 2’s pot.

2nd Hank-Ter Braak (20) 37pts

3rd Peter Henshaw (22) 35pts

Paul B Garvey took a major step towards realizing his golfing potential as he whipped the St. Andrews course with a splendid C Flight and man of the match 40 points.  Pay window specialist Hank-Ter Braak followed Paul up the podium steps with a fine 37 points.  Peter Henshaw took the bronze two further back.

The man on form, Tom McManus, took the honours in B Flight with a steady even par round.  Tom led the formidable pair of Andre Fortis and Mike ‘the Welsh dragon’ Jefferys as Andre’s inner nine contained the better maths.

You had to be named Paul to get a spot on the A Flight podium; Aussie star Paul Bray led the way with a rock solid 38 points followed by Paul V Smith with 37 points, as old friend Paul Walla closed the flight with a count back verdict over JP Maffray.

Paraic McManus André Fortis and Colm O’Donovan shared the 2’s pot.

Thursday, Jan. 22, Pattana B & C – Stableford

A Flight

1st John Carlton (11) 35pts

2nd Paraic McManus (8) 32pts

3rd Bob Stokes (12) 32pts

B Flight

1st Christy Knight (22) 29pts

2nd Pat Higney) 28pts

3rd John O’Neil (19) 28pts

Well it wasn’t pretty and nobody’s handicap is going anywhere as the lads and lasses threw a non-counter at the demanding Pattana course.  Tales of horror abounded as the greens were lightning fast.  John Carlton and Christy ‘good’ Knight each stood atop of their respective flight podiums.  Paraic McManus stared wistfully upwards from his A Flight second place vantage point.  He was accompanied, albeit a step below, by Bob Stokes with the aid of a favourable count back decision.

The B Flight boys seem to be getting tired of playing six times a week as Christy ‘good’ Knight’s 29 points was good for the top spot.  Four players were seen brawling it out for the minor flight spots; Pat Higney and Buddy Collis came out on top and climbed the podium in that order while Nail McManus and John O’Neil stood at the bar and shared a pint of Guinness.

Gaston Oggier made off with the 2’s pot.

Friday, Jan. 23, Pattavia – Stableford

A Flight

1st Paul v Smith (12) 34pts

2nd Tom McManus (14) 33pts

3rd Anne Stokes (12) 32pts

B Flight

1st Tore Eliassen (19) 36pts

2nd Eddy Beilby (18) 34pts

3rd John O’Neil (19) 31pts

C Flight

1st Din Lehmer (21) 35pts

2nd Ed Delaney (26) 32pts

3rd Hank-Ter Braak (23) 30pts

It was a tough day for the lads and lasses at the Sir Nick Faldo designed course Pattavia.  None of the forty odd competitors could do no better that Tore ‘the quite one’ Eliassen’s even par round in B Flight.  Eddy the Eagle’ Beilby swooped in to snatch the silver with 34 points as John O’Neil closed the flight out with 31 points.

The inform man in the premier flight, Paul V Smith, made it three flight spots this week as he picked up the gold.  Tom McManus also made it three pay window visits this week as he took home the silver and John Carlton showed great chivalry as he stood aside and allowed Anne Stokes to lift the bronze on count back.

Dropping down to C Flight it was Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer who stood proudly atop of the podium with a tidy 35 points.  Ed ‘the Irish rover’ Delaney was the holder of the silver spot with 32 points.  Hank-Ter Braak was pleased as punch to be holding the bronze prize courtesy of Peter Darfern not being a member.

Tore Eliassen and Ed Delaney split the2’s pot.
