Travellers Rest Golf Group

Monday, Feb. 16, Pattavia – Stableford

Golf this week got underway on Monday with another trip to Pattavia, it seems we like to be tormented by those impossible greens and keep coming back for more.  When you manage to hit the greens in regulation and then proceed to four and even five putt it does tend to play on one’s mind just a tad.  It was therefore no surprise on the day that in a large field only one player played to his handicap.

In Division 1 it was a very tight finish with just two points covering the first three.  Mike Smith managed to get the better of Ryan Thomas but only on count back and Ryan’s dad Alan Thomas was right behind in third place.

Neil Bramley, Roger Wilkinson & Neil Wilkinson.Neil Bramley, Roger Wilkinson &  Neil Wilkinson.

In Division 2, Ted Senior, who has been on a good run of late, shot his handicap and took first place and must be congratulated as it was no mean feat on the day.  In second place came my old mate Seamus Farrell, playing off a 30 handicap.  He was later being berated by one of the very low handicap players for finishing among the prizes who seemed to take exception at Seamus for having the audacity to be on the leaderboard with his handicap.  Surely this is what the golf handicap is all about.  It allows people who are no longer in the full flush of youth and perhaps a smidgen overweight to continue playing a game they love with their mates and to compete with better golfers.

In third place came Bill Reid, who has also been showing some good form.

Div.1 (0-14)

1st Mike Smith (5) 32pts

2nd Ryan Thomas (0) 32pts

3rd Alan Thomas (5) 31pts

Div.2 (15+)

1st Ted Senior (15) 36pts

2nd Seamus Farrell (30) 35pts

3rd Bill Reid (15) 34pts

Tuesday, Feb. 17, Eastern Star – Stableford

On Tuesday it was off to Eastern Star and another tricky golf course.  In Division 1 it was Neil Bramley once again returning to the top of the leaderboard but only getting the better of the other “Mr Consistent”, Alan Thomas, after a count back.  I sometimes think those two guys are joined at the hip.  Robert Bjorkqvist managed to break up the cartel by being a new name in the top three.

In Division 2 it was Joe Nagle who won for the second Tuesday on the trot.  I am still not sure whether Joe is getting to be consistent or whether he just likes Tuesdays.  In second place Larry Simpson returned to the top three, this time last year he was always there.  Bringing up third place was the always well turned out Mike Lam.

Div.1 (0-12)

1st Neil Bramley (8) 32pts

2nd Alan Thomas (5) 32pts

3rd Robert Bjorkqvist (12) 30pts

Div.2 (13+)

1st Joe Nagle (18) 39 pts

2nd Larry Simpson (15) 35 pts

3rd Mike Lam (21) 34pts

Thursday, Feb. 19, Green Valley – Stableford

So many turned up our regular venue Green Valley on Thursday that it was a job to fit everybody in, but eventually we all got to play although three divisions were necessary.  The weather turned nasty later in the day and some of us got to try out our umbrellas once again.

In Division 1, big Martin Cooper just got the better of Alan Thomas after count back.  I must remember to ask Alan Thomas if he ever, and I do mean ever, hits a bad shot.  He is like a metronome.  Bringing up third place was Scotland’s Alan Murray.

In Division 2 another old mate Roger Wilkinson played some really good golf to take first place.  John Baxter and once again Ted Senior filled slots two and three.

Neil Easthaugh shot the best score of the day in Division 3 and won easily.  A trip to the handicap headmaster later in the day resulted in a very severe dressing down.  Tim Dalton in second and Seamus Farrell in third escaped with handicaps intact.

Div.1 (0-11)

1st Martin Cooper (3) 35pts

2nd Alan Thomas (5) 35pts

3rd Alan Murray (11) 34pts

Div. 2 (12-16)

1st Roger Wilkinson (14) 37pts

2nd John Baxter (15) 35pts

3rd Ted Senior (14) 33pts

Div.3 (17+)

1st Neil Easthaugh (36) 42pts

2nd Tim Dalton (17) 34pts

3rd Seamus Farrell (30) 32pts

Saturday, Feb. 21, Greenwood – Stableford

We rounded of the week on Saturday with a trip over to Greenwood (A and B courses).  Division 1 was taken apart by Mike Rushant and I have to say what a good golfer that boy is, always there or thereabouts.  He finished miles ahead of second placed Martin Cooper and third placed German Odermatt, who both returned the same score.

In Division 2, Aussie Neil Wilkinson beat cowboy Reg Glass on count back (Reg always wears a cowboy hat).  The un-colour coordinated and jolly Frank Courtney took third spot.

Div.1 (0-12)

1st Mike Rushant (10) 41pts

2nd Martin Cooper (2) 35pts

3rd German Odermatt (13) 35pts

Div.2 (13+)

1st Neil Wilkinson (13) 39pts

2nd Reg Glass (18) 39pts

3rd Frank Courtney (15) 35pts
