PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society

Monday, April 6, Rayong C.C. – Stableford

It was a Public Holiday in Thailand so most of the golf courses hiked up their rates but after looking on the PSC golf rates schedule we saw that Rayong Country Club had a very reasonable price for weekends and holidays so we decided to give them a go.

We didn’t have great numbers signed up for the day but we had a terrific group of dedicated faithfulls and we certainly weren’t disappointed; 1,100 baht each including shared cart was in our eyes a steal and the golf course has certainly improved greatly since we played it many months ago.  There were very few bare patches on the fairways and the greens, although somewhat slow were generally in quite good shape.

There were very few other golfers on the course and on a hot day with little wind we got around in just under four and a half hours and it was a credit to the golf course to see that all of the drink stops were open on such a quiet day.

It was a good old tussle in group one between Ken Hole and myself (Peter Blackburn) and we both ended up with 33 points, with Ken winning on count back with a 15 point back nine to my 14 points.

2nd Peter Blackburn (16) 33pts

Long Putts: #18 – Stephen Newton

Wednesday, April 8 – Burapha C & D – Stableford

It was time to take advantage of the Sports Day rate at the classy Burapha Golf Course and we had quite a good field signed up for the day.  Our first tee time was 10.12 a.m. and we arrived in plenty of time to relax, have a few practice putts and a cold drink before we started.

C & D nines were allocated to us and with no-one in sight in front of us our first group hit off C1 tee a couple of minutes early in fine but hot weather with menacing rain clouds overhead.  The course was excellent as usual with the greens quite quick although a few of them had some fairly ordinary patches on them, but overall in good shape.

We came to a halt after fifteen holes when the heavens eventually opened and there was a downpour for about forty minutes but although one group of four “surrendered” to the conditions the rest of us waited patiently and sure enough the rain stopped and we were able to continue without any further delay.

We had just the one flight on the day with 4 places up for grabs and there were also rewards for nearest the pin on two of the par threes & longest first putts on C9 and D9.  Many thanks to Stephen Newton once again for contributing to the novelty awards.

The weather didn’t seem to effect big Stephen Truelove as he carded 39 points and won the day by 2 points from P J Mitchell with Stephen’s mate Gerd Riedler finishing third with 35.  With 2 players on 34 points a count back was needed which resulted in your writer, Peter Blackburn (17 point back nine) finishing fourth from an unlucky Stephen Newton (15 point back nine) who just missed out on a podium spot.

1st Stephen Truelove (10) 39pts

2nd PJ Mitchell (20) 37pts

3rd Gerd Riedler (9) 35pts

4th Peter Blackburn (16) 34pts

Near Pins: C5 – Gerd Riedler, D2 – Ken Hole

Long Putts: D9 – Stephen Newton
