PSC Golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Jan. 19, Burapha A & B – Stableford

Looking at the scores it was obvious the six groups were happy to be back on A and B with scores being generally much better than the previous week.  Welcome in particular to Pete Sumner & Tim Hake, playing with us for the first time, also to Chris Voller, who is returning to Hua Hin with us in March, along with quite a few others.  Ray Key and his mate Bill, also were having a knock again with us after some years.

Ed Turner made the most of the slope advantage which pushed his course handicap up to 23 by recording the day’s best score to win the second div with 42pts from playing partners, Tom Parker (37) and Chris Thompson (34).

(Left-right) JP Maffray, Stephen (Waldo) Blazsanyik, Bob St Aubin, Greg Hill and Andre Coetzee.(Left-right) JP Maffray, Stephen (Waldo) Blazsanyik, Bob St Aubin, Greg Hill and Andre Coetzee.

Pete Sumner won the top div with 41pts from two very consistent golfers and both regulars on this course; Dennis Pelly and John Cunningham who both had 37pts.

Finally, a special welcome back to Jim Brackett, sporting a couple of new knees and having his first game since the operation back in November.  Well done mate, I’m sure it won’t take long for the game to come back!

John Cunningham had two ‘2’s (A3 & B8) and Kim Danboise (B8) and Tom Parker (A6) one each.

Outback observation: Weather – sunny, cool wind; Check in – fast and friendly; Tee time – early; Fairways – a lot of run; Rough – light; Greens – fast and true; Bunkers – poorly raked; Value for money – reasonable for high season; Pace of play – 4 hours 30 mins; Drink stations open – all 4 open; Restaurant – not visited (price!)

2nd Dennis Pelly (11) 37pts

3rd John Cunningham (6) 37pts

Div B (19+)

1st Ed Turner (23) 42pts

Wednesday, Jan. 21, Khao Kheow – Stableford

It’s a long time since we’ve had to moan about a course but I’m afraid today Khao Kheow deserves it.  The course was very busy with all three nines open but our scheduled tee time of 9.20 never happened, there was a 4-ball from wherever on the wrong nine and we had to move; the final straw being us getting stuck behind two 5-balls, one of them – all five walking!  Come on Khao Kheow, you’re having a laugh, at least do what other courses do and make them all use carts, what about all the other players on the course – ruin their day!

Now John Lawton doesn’t very often play here because he doesn’t like the course and he can’t play it – well that just proves it’s all between the ears, as he played just about as well as I have seen him play for a long time; a fantastic 41pts, admittedly off a slope enhanced handicap but even so, a very good result.  Second was Ed Turner (37) following up his win at Burapha on Monday, with three players all on 33pts; namely Tom Parker, Peter Erikson and Suzi Lawton.

Suzi got the only ‘2’ on her nemesis hole B8, normally she doesn’t make the green!

Outback observation: Weather – very pleasant, wind later; Check in – busy; Tee time – 20 minutes late; Fairways – good; Rough – light; Greens – pretty quick; Bunkers – soft; Value for money – good; Pace of play – about 5 hours; Drink stations open – all 4 open; Restaurant – busy but ok.

1st John Lawton (19) 41pts

2nd Ed Turner (21) 37pts

3rd Tom Parker (23) 33pts

4th Peter Erikson (6) 33pts

Friday, Jan. 23, Green Valley – Medal

Today was our monthly Medal, sponsored by Greg Hirst of DeVere, the first one of 2015 and we had a good turnout of 38 players.

We had a problem with caddies, or should I say lack of caddies and carts, as Green Valley had accommodated 200 Koreans to play at 6ish this morning, so some of us had to wait for a caddie or cart to arrive, which disrupted our start sheet as we had to move people about.  I would just like to point out that doing the start sheet and the score cards takes the organisers a good few hours before and after the competition, so please bear with us.

As we were entering the scores for the day we noticed one particular card which read 564 828825 on the front nine reminding us for some reason of Buzby, the UK BT telephone advert, whose line was “make someone happy with a phone call”.  I think after posting those numbers, that would have been all Sugar could have hoped for.

General Jack’s 500 baht bonus bar voucher was only claimed once today, in a day of below average scoring, as he set the target at 68.  The claimant was the day’s winner, Steve Blazsanyik, colloquially known as Waldo, who finished with a net 67.  Four shots back was JP Maffray and nobody else broke par.

Bob St Aubin and Andre Coetzee both recorded 73’s, a good recovery for Andre after an 8 on the second hole, as he went on the claim the low gross medal with 79.  Peter Nixon and Dennis Pelly, both playing off 9, carded 74 and 75 respectively.

Many thanks to Greg Hill, who kindly sponsored the day’s near pins but unfortunately was taken ill on the course, shortly after the start.  Hope you’re OK now Greg, thanks again and good luck with your move to Hua Hin, see you down there in March.

Near pin winners were Geoff Stimpson (5th), Bob St Aubin (8th), Jim Brackett (12th) and Bob Finley (16th).

There were four ‘2’s; two from Sugar Ray 5th & 8th, another by Bob St Aubin (8th) and the last from Michael Wittmaak on the 16th.

Outback observation: Weather – Hazy with cloud cover; Check in – Good; Tee time – On time; Fairways – Slightly wind burnt on some fairways; Rough – Dry in certain areas; Greens – Moderate; Bunkers – ok; Value for money – good; Pace of play – 4 hours 20mins; Drink stations open – all open; Restaurant – not visited
