Tuesday, March 20, Bangpakong Riverside – Stableford

We had a good turnout today for a course in fine condition.  We used to get some really high scores here but of late the results have been more moderate and on this day, with the fairways well grassed and the rough a little long, I expected no more.  The greens were a bit slow also but were still true and a pleasure to play.

One thing that was noticeable was that the pins seemed to be in difficult positions, surely to be reflected in the results.  We were not held up and managed to get around in reasonable time.  This is really a course where you can have ‘a walk in the park’.

In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Paul Weatherley with a very good 42 points ahead of Tom Herrington in second with also a fine 41 points.  In third was Andre Van Dyk with 39 points and in fourth was Brian Parish with 38 on count-back over Takeshi Hakozaki.

In the B Flight, 19+, the winner was Gordon Clegg with 38 points, ahead of Carole Kubicki in second with 36.  In third was Nigel Perry with 35 points and in fourth was Derek Brook with 34.

The best front nine by non-winners was by Takeshi Hakozaki with 20 points and the back nine winner was John Davis on count-back over Richard Kubicki and Bob Britton.

We had also been running an eclectic at Bangpakong for the last three visits and the winner was Karen Brown.

Friday, March 23, Khao Kheow – Stableford

A full group of twenty-nine golfers decided Khao Kheow wasn’t too tough for them, so after meet and greet at BJ’S Lodge everyone saddled up for the ride out.

Everyone knows Khao Kheow is a tough course, however this week it was made even tougher by less than stellar course condition, especially the fairways.  Assigned to play “C” & “A” nines and getting away on time we found the “C” nine already into the low season maintenance phase with scarified fairways.  While the greens were overall in good shape (and quite fast with several tricky pin positions), many fairways were weedy, and complicated by loose cut grass on most of them.  Players were constantly moving handfuls of dead grass away from their ball in the middle of the fairway.

You would assume that with those conditions and the tough layout scores would be on the low side, but tough conditions bring out the best of the best and Landis Brooks (c/h 9) had the top net score of the day with 39 points to win the A Flight.  Four shots back Richard Kubicki (14) earned second place with 35 point, followed by Alan Sullivan (16) over Rob Brown (7) on count-back at 34.

In B-Flight (18+), Paul Weatherley (18) made it two in a row by taking his flight with an excellent 38 points.  Gordon Glegg (27) continued to hear his name called out with his 37 point day and Graham Buckingham (20) and Jim Ferris (24) finished the flight with 34 and 33 points respectively.

Carole Kubicki (24) won the classiest ladies flight with the day’s high 40 points, followed by Karen Brown (36) with 36.

Best Nines (non winners) came from John Davis and Mick Coghlan.
