World Muay Thai Boxing Championship coming to Pattaya

The 2014 World Muay Thai Championship will be held on the sports field of the Pattaya No. 8 School (opposite Chaimongkol Temple) in south Pattaya from March 12–24.

Organizers estimate some 500-600 boxer from 47 countries will take part in the 2-week event which will be divided into three distinct segments: Amateur Muay Thai World Championship (14 weight classes for male boxers and 7 weight classes for female boxers); Semi-Professional Muay Thai World Championship (12 weight classes for male boxers and 6 weight classes for female boxers); and Professional Muaythai World Championship, with just 3 weight classes for male boxers.

Pradit Thongchai, Chief of the Sport Development Division, says Thailand will only send boxers to participate in certain weight classes as the competition is more for foreign boxers who love the Thai fighting art and he hopes a larger foreign contingent will add to the popularity of the event and act as a boost to local tourism.
