PSC Golf from The Golf Club

Another year has flown by and The Golf Club and Asiabound were on the road from Feb. 2nd -5th to host England v. Rest of the World at four of the best golf courses in the north of Thailand.  This is the most eagerly anticipated event on our golf calendar and this year 36 golfers winged their way up to do battle once more.  We played Royal Chiang Mai on Day 1, Summit Green Valley for Day 2, Alpine Chiang Mai on Day 3 and finished at the stunning Chiang Mai Highlands for the singles.

Highlight of the tour this year was a double first… a hole in one for Steve Weller and a first ace for the Mulberry Ryder Cup!  It was the 12th hole at Alpine that handed Steve the ace, but he ended up halving the hole as Jeff Calrow, with a stroke, sunk a 28-footer for the birdie!

American Mike Meir was voted M.V.P. as Captains Dale Shier (England) and Gavin Wright (R.O.W.) handed over the reins for next year to Alex Tregurtha and Jeff Hanack.  The final tote saw the Rest of the World victorious over England by 25.5 to 19.5.  It was a great week of golf and we had the opportunity to welcome 4 new golfers to this year’s event, all brought together by our buddy Steve Mulberry.

Monday, Feb. 2, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

T1st Mark Wood (7) 35pts

T1st Bob Mulholland (10) 35pts

T1st Phil Smedley (9) 35pts

A slightly smaller field on Monday as many of us were up in Chiang Mai on the Mulberry Ryder Cup.  Never mind, it was still tough going and the best score was a mere 35 points that ended up as a 3-way tie for first!

One reason people flock to Pattaya in February is the weather, and this time of the year you can count on it being just perfect.  With low humidity on the course, you hardly break into a sweat.  That doesn’t make things any easier though, it just makes the misery more comfortable.

Wednesday, Feb. 4, Pattavia (white tees) – Stableford

1st Kenny Aihara (5) 37pts

2nd Fred Graham (20) 33pts

3rd Bob Mulholland (10) 31pts

He won at Greenwood the previous Wednesday and he did it again today.  Kenny Aihara got a few tips a couple of weeks back from David Rose on the range, and he has added 15 yards to his drives.  After a bit of struggling it looks like it has all come together for Ken.

Pattavia Century is getting better all the time, but the greens are still where many of us lose strokes.  If you are above the hole it gets scary, and that goes for many of the greens out here.  Even though Freddy Graham was 4 points back, a 33 is a very respectable score on this course.  That was enough to give him sole second place while Bob Mulholland’s 31 put him last on the podium but many ahead of the rest of the field.  Bob tied for first at RGV on Monday so it had been a good week for him up to that point.

Friday, Feb. 6, The Emerald (white tees) – Stableford

1st Dean Polvi (24) 34pts

T2nd Jim Zwiefel (14) 32pts

T2nd Terry Pettitt (13) 32pts

Finally, a drive to the south to visit a local fave in Ban Chang.  The first few holes at Emerald seem so gentle and fair, but by the 4th all that changes and the difficulty of this course is revealed, which allows for few mistakes.  The course was in good, but not great, shape although they take care of things here as best they can within their given budget.

It is a great round of golf when a 24 handicapper can shoot 34 points here and Dean Polvi did just that for the win.  That could translate to a 40 on some other tracks so well played to Dean.  Second place was a tie at the 32 point mark as the visitors swept the leaderboard to leave the locals out in the cold.
