Wednesday, August 5 Burapha A+B Stableford
Burapha Golf Club is running a fantastic special deal for senior golfers (over 60 years) at just 1250 baht for green fee, caddie and cart, a price we never thought we would see again at this course. With this in mind, we had our biggest turnout of players for quite a few weeks. Twenty- four starters lined up to play the A and B combination.
Of those twenty-four, only six admitted to being under 60 years, but we had green fee vouchers for them at 700 baht. so, fair to say, with tongue firmly in cheek, that we did have a veritable Dad’s Army today.
The weather was almost identical to Monday, with skies in various shades of grey and a nice, relatively cool, breeze all day.
This course is preparing for the Singha Pattaya Open and is in immaculate condition. The greens are in the final stage of preparation and have quite a bit of sand on them, but still played true, if not so quick, and the rough is left to grow high normally, and even more so for a tournament.
The ‘young guns’ led the way to the podium with the first two placings going to players under age 60. Craig Webster seems unstoppable, or until the handicapper catches up, and had another resounding victory by scoring a big 41 points and another Green Jacket.
Then followed two recent Green Jacket winners, both on 39 points. Mike Firkin did better on the back nine, as he tends to do, to win a countback over Wayne Peppernell, who is still tracking well on the comeback. Any other day 39 points might have been good enough.
Indeed, so would 38 points, but that only got Tony Browne a fourth place.
Having more players out enabled us to have extra prizes, so we doubled up on the near pins by splitting them into two flights.
Near Pins A flight: Bill Copeland, Wayne Peppernell, and Craig Webster.
Near Pins B flight: Walter Baechli, Peter Allen, and Serge Straeten.
We had extra pins out but two were unclaimed.

1st Place – Craig Webster (18) – 41 pts
2nd Place – Mike Firkin (22) – 39 pts c/back
3rd Place – Wayne Peppernell (16) – 39 pts
4th Place – Tony Browne (19) – 38 pts
Best Front Nine (non winners) – Glen Elsworth – 19 pts
Best Back Nine (non winners) – Derek Phillips – 21 pts c/back
With the course in such good condition, we saw eight scores of 36 or more and then, an interesting observation. Seventeen of the twenty-four players had higher scores on the back nine than the front. The B course must be easier? Or did it take that long to warm up?
This is always a top course and, at this special price for oldies, we will be taking advantage again on Aug. 26, so join the ‘Army’.
