BANGKOK, 25 May 2011 – The Department of Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) will inspect 100 out of 2,000 formulas of Thai herbal medicines claimed to have potential to cure first-stage cancer.
Speaking about cancer herbal remedies, DTAM Director-General Medial Doctor Wilawan Juengprasert admitted that details of the medicinal formulas cannot be disclosed at present since people might panic and hastily buy them to cure cancer, and it is dangerous if herbal medicines are used incorrectly.
The director-general explained that use of herbal medicines to cure cancer must be made according to the formula specified by traditional medicine practitioners while inappropriate dose of herbal drugs might lead to some side effects.
Medical Doctor Wilawan said there are 100 herbal formulas with potential to cure cancer, and the department will take greater study to see if they are efficient for cancer treatment as claimed by traditional doctors. She expected that some of the research results would be disclosed this September.
The director-general added that most of the suggested formulas contain ingredients which are capable of curing breast cancer while some may cure many types of cancer; however, she noted that there is no specific dose for each herbal medicine since the amount to be taken must be decided by traditional medicinal doctors who will analyse their patients on a case-by-case basis.
