SAMUT PRAKAN, Feb 26 – At least 11 workers were killed and 15 injured in an accident at a hospital construction site in this Bangkok suburb Tuesday prompting the provincial governor to order the suspension of construction.

Among those killed, eight were Cambodian workers while the other three were Thai nationals.

A concrete beam connecting two buildings of the Ramathibodi-Bang Plee Hospital in Bang Phli district collapsed on Tuesday. Witnesses said the concrete structure supporting the building’s elevators collapsed and fell onto workers who had lunch at the site

Samut Prakan provincial governor Kanit Iamrahong inspected the site, instructing building contractor to suspend the works and examine all elevator shafts.

The contractor reportedly agreed to pay for compensation for family of those killed and the injured.

Meanwhile, the Labour Department is working to examine whether the accident-affected Cambodian workers have been recruited legally to ensure that they are entitled to receive full compensation as their Thai co-workers.

Bang Phli police superintendent Pol Col Korawat Hanpradit said the police are yet to file any charges against anyone as investigation is under way to collect evidence to determine the cause of the accident.
