SA KAEO, April 25 – Thai border authorities today arrested 16 Uyghurs Muslims as they tried to illegally enter Thailand.
Sa Kaeo Deputy Immigration Police Commissioner Pol Lt Col Benjapon Rodsawas said a combined force of immigration police and army patrolled a Cambodian border zone this morning and intercepted a pickup truck which looked suspicious in Aranyaprathet-Khao Chakan Road in Wattana Nakhon district.
Inspecting the vehicle, security personnel found 16 illegal immigrants, including children. All were later taken for questioning at an army checkpoint.
Although the detainees have no travel or national identity documents, investigators initially believe that they are members of the Uyghur Muslim minority and were destined for Malaysia.
Police said they will be charged with illegal entry to the kingdom.
