16th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians begins in Bangkok

BANGKOK, 12 June 2015 – Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Thursday (June 11) graciously opened the 16th Conference of the Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians, or CONSAL XVI, at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center in Bang Na area.

CONSAL XVI is jointly organized by the National Library of Thailand, the Thai Library Association and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration from June 11-13, 2015, under the theme of “Asian Aspirations: Libraries for Sustainable Advancement”. It is aimed at strengthening cooperation among the 10 Southeast Asian countries in improving their libraries in terms of management, services and library-using techniques. Such improvements will in turn increase intellectual development of their people and bring good results to the development of the whole society.

The 3-day conference will include numerous paper presentations and lectures by leading academicians. The congress also dedicates part of its space to an exhibition in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on the occasion of her fifth cycle birthday on April 2, this year. The Princess has been recognized for her outstanding support to development of libraries both in and out of the country and to the promotion of reading habit of Thai people. More than 600 representatives from local and foreign libraries are attending the congress.
