BANGKOK, 22 Oct 2013 The police have indicated that it is considering expanding upon the new initiative to relieve traffic congestion in Bangkok by towing away cars parked in no-parking areas instead of applying wheel locks.
On the first day the new initiative went into effect, Bangkok police towed away a total of 19 cars that were parked along no-parking areas on the 10 roads marked as the pilot zone for the towing scheme. Cars were towed by policemen from 9 stations in Bangkok, but Talat Phlu station was found to have towed 6 vehicles, the highest number by any station. Police from the stations responsible for the 10 pilot roads also issued a total of 97 tickets for parking violations. Around 200 towing vehicles had been deployed on Monday to support the measure.
According to Assistant Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, Pol. Lt. Gen. Rueangsak Charit-ek, the towing measure will be expanded to cover the entire capital city if it is found effective at alleviating traffic congestion, and it is possible the measure could later be implemented throughout the country.
