TRANG, Feb 10 – Seaside Trang province in the Thai South has welcomed 32 couples who are tying the knot underwater to welcome St. Valentine’s Day, which falls on Feb 14.

All couples joining in the 18th Underwater Wedding Ceremony, organised by the southern resort-oriented Thai province during Feb 10-12, were warmly received on Monday by Trang Governor Somsak Parisuttho Hemthanon.

The 32 couples participating in the mass wedding are both Thai and foreign, with five couples from France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, and China.

After a welcoming ceremony at the airport, they travelled to plant eagle-wood trees, in Thai known as “Mai Kritsana” at a botanic garden in Yantakhao area, and later attended a traditional Thai wedding ceremony with the pouring of Buddhist ceremonially sacred lustral water, after a “Khan Mak” procession around Trang municipality.

Tomorrow, six couples will register their marriages under the sea off Kradan Island, in Kantang district.

The event is expected to attract up to Bt30 million spending in the province.

A total of 482 couples have participated in this event during the 17 times it has been held, beginning in 1997. Of this number, 405 couples were Thai and 77 couples were foreigners coming from 31 countries.
