BANGKOK, 27 December 2013 35 provinces in Thailand’s upper parts have been declared disaster zones as local residents struggle to cope with lingering wintry conditions.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has reported that since a strong cold front from China began to cover parts of Thailand earlier this month, over 20 million residents have been affected by the temperature drop.
The Northeast is hardest hit, with over 20 provinces experiencing a cold snap. Sub-zero temperature and frost have also been reported at northern mountain peaks and mountainous areas.
Nearly 300,000 sets of winter gear and blankets have been delivered to those affected; however, more are needed for those living in remote areas.
As the weather bureau has forecast that the cold spell will linger until the New Year’s day, local authorities have been closely monitoring the situation and prepared to extend assistance to disaster victims.
