BANGKOK, 15 August 2011 – Former Prime Minister and Democrat Party Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva is monitoring if the new government will continue the income guarantee scheme for farmers adopted during his administration or not.
Speaking before departing to visit residents affected by flood in the lower north on Monday, Mr Abhisit stated that he wanted to see the damage made to farmers participating in the income guarantee scheme.
The ex-prime minister however noted that he does not know if the new government will continue the income guarantee scheme for farmers or not until the new government delivers the policy statement to Parliament.
Mr Abhisit pointed out that farmers will not be compensated if the Pheu Thai Party adopts only its crop mortgaging policy and revoke the income guarantee scheme for farmers. He said he also does not know if criteria to give assistance to people will be changed or not.
As for the policy statement of the new government, the Democrat leader suggested that each minister should be well prepared for the upcoming debate because his party already has information on hand.
