BANGKOK, 24 June 2015  – A group of consumer activists have called on the Constitution Drafting Committee to include in the new charter an independent body to protect Thai consumers.

On Tuesday, CDC Chairman Borwornsak Uwanno met with representatives from a group of consumers who have had adverse experiences when using goods and services.

The group has submitted a letter to Mr. Borwornsak asking for a provision in the draft Constitution that authorizes the setting up of a new independent organization tasked with the protection of consumers and related matters of reform.

The petition followed a suggestion from the Cabinet to remove such a stipulation from the draft charter.

Mr. Borwornsak said that consideration of the group’s petition will have to wait for the CDC’s deliberation of all proposed changes submitted by various groups, to be completed first.

The CDC Chairman added that he had not previously heard of the Cabinet’s suggested removal of the clause related to the setting up of a new consumer group.
