BANGKOK,(NNT) – Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group still plans to invest in Thailand and aims to target this country as its e-commerce base, said Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana.
He dismissed rumors that Alibaba Group, with Lazada Thailand as its affiliate, will shift their investment plan from Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) to Malaysia, insisting the latest contact from the ministry to Alibaba confirms the company still has investment plans in Thailand.
He said Alibaba is aiming to target Thailand as its e-commerce base in the ASEAN region by investing in the E-Commerce Park project that is pending customs negotiation to make the area a tax-free zone, and aimed to extend its market to CLMV countries.
Executives of Lazada will meet with the secretary general of EEC development project policy committee to discuss the progress of investment, and the guideline for the development of an e-commerce hub in Thailand to help with product distribution, and enhancing SME businesses and community enterprises on online marketing, improving their capability to penetrate the global market.
