BANGKOK, 10 October 2013 – Deputy leader of the Democrat Party Alongkorn Polabutr told viewers in a local television show that he is determined to change the face of the Democrat Party for the better – the main focus being to benefit the Thai people.
According to him, one of the main problems that is crippling the Democrat Party is its old infrastructure. The deputy leader insists that a reform is, indeed, necessary and that members must acknowledge many of the party’s faults and weaknesses.
He says that “being different doesn’t mean being discordant”. In order to win an election, one must first be open-minded and realize the bigger picture. In other words, the party as a whole must take into account the importance of its 3 million party members – and especially the 12 million voters that have entrusted their votes to the party. Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has also expressed his accordance with Mr. Alongkorn in this matter.
The deputy leader continues on in the program saying that the so called “reboot” or reform must be done so that the party truly becomes democratic: having various viewpoints and being able to discuss them in a democratic manner. Moreover, to show one’s true intentions of change, party members must elect and appoint a new executive committee.
Mr. Alongkorn denies any rumors of him defecting to another party, saying that doing so will only render himself untrustworthy to his peers. Though he sees himself as a bitter pill to swallow, the deputy leader says that he feels many in the party agree with him – albeit realizing there are also those who do not see eye to eye with him.
