BANGKOK, 24 April 2015 – Secretary-General of the National Reform Council (NRC) Whip Alongkorn Ponlabutr on Friday said the NRC’s debate on the draft constitution would take place as scheduled. The debate will likely end on 26 April at 9 PM.
After that, the NRC had one month to review the draft constitution, said Mr. Alongkorn. The NRC Whip secretary-general added that he personally viewed that a general election could not be postponed since Thailand needed to return to democracy quickly in line with the roadmap of the National Council for peace and Order. An election would take place early or mid 2016 if a referendum was arranged, he said.
Mr. Alongkorn added that the temporary charter must be amended if all sides agreed on a referendum. If a referendum should be organized, there would be no need for the NRC to vote on the draft charter, he said.
