BANGKOK, 19 March 2013 (NNT) – The Election Commission has set April 21 as the date for the by-election in Chiang Mai’s 3rd constituency.

The member of parliament seat for the constituency became vacant after Phuea Thai Party MP Kasem Nimmonrat’s resignation from the MP post took effect on 13 March.

Suranand Vejjajiva, secretary-general to the Prime Minister, indicated that whether the Phuea Thai Party’s candidate for the constituency would be the widely-anticipated Yaowapha Wongsawat depended on the decision of the party executives. He also said the party was not preparing a “stand-in prime minister” as alleged by the government opposition.

Opposition Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said his party was considering whom to field for the re-election. The party was determining whether the previous candidate was ready and willing to run again.

Chiang Mai’s 3rd constituency covers the districts of San Kamphaeng, Doi Saket and Mae On.
