NARATHIWAT, 5 July 2013 The Army commander-in-chief has reiterated that troops will remain in the Deep South if violence continues unabated, and has ordered an increase in security measures for the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

At the same time, Narathiwat Task Force commander, Major General Phisit Sitthisan said soldiers were adhering to previous security measures for the month of Ramadan, such as setting up checkpoints, conducting patrols, and providing security along certain routes. Maj. Gen. Phisit has also told subordinates to facilitate Muslim Thais in their conduct of religious activities during Ramadan.

In Narathiwat province’s Chanae district, an improvised explosive exploded on Thursday morning onto a team of Rangers patrolling a road to provide security for teachers, wounding 2 of the soldiers. Both are in stable condition after receiving treatment at Narathiwat Ratchanakharin hospital.

The improvised bomb was hidden inside a fertilizer bag placed underneath a tree by the side of the road the Rangers were patrolling, and was detonated by a mobile phone.

Officials believe the bombing was an attempt to counter the locals’ recent display of objection toward violent means.
