BANGKOK, 23 July 2012  – The ASEAN Chief has indicated that Myanmar President Thien Sein’s visit to Thailand is a good sign for the ASEAN development.

ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan said that Thien Sein’s first Thailand visit since he took office in February 2011 shows a good sign of more cooperation from Myanmar in the ASEAN affairs. He stated that the move shows Myanmar’s readiness to host the ASEAN Summit in 2014 and cordial intention to help push for the region’s development ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)’s establishment in 2015.

He added that Thailand will be able to reap benefits from the Dawei Deep-Sea Port development and other cooperation such as Burmese labor welfare improvement. He explained that the port will encourage better investment atmosphere to ASEAN investors.
