AYUTTHAYA, 22 Oct 2013 Deputy Prime Minister Yukol Limlaemthong is confident the inner areas of Ayutthaya province will no longer become inundated during the flood season once construction of the Khlong Kramang and Khlong Hantra sluice gates is completed.

Mr. Yukol on Monday presided over the opening ceremony of the construction of the sluice gates for the two canals. The event was also attended by Japanese ambassador to Thailand Shigekazu Sato, who led Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) personnel in witnessing the launch.

According to Mr. Yukol, the Japanese government is giving 1 billion baht to the Thai government to help with the two projects. The money is being disbursed through JICA, and will be used to fund construction of the sluice gates and buy 10 mobile water pumps. According to the deputy prime minister, the two sluice gates will be completed in November 2014, and will prevent flooding in inner Ayutthaya as well as the industrial estates in the province.
