Bangkok choked by PM2.5: All 50 districts in orange zone, pollution worsening.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Air pollution in Bangkok continues to be a concern as PM2.5 levels exceeded the standard this morning, placing all 50 districts in the orange zone. The pollution is expected to rise further.

As of 7:00 AM on January 31, the average PM2.5 concentration in Bangkok was recorded at 48.7 µg/m³, exceeding the safety standard and reaching the orange level, which indicates potential health impacts. The highest concentration was in Nong Khaem District at 65 µg/m³, followed by Phasi Charoen at 60.3 µg/m³ and Thawi Watthana at 59.6 µg/m³. The trend suggests a further increase in pollution levels.

Meanwhile, in Ang Thong province, the situation is even more alarming, with an average AQI of 202 and PM2.5 levels reaching 126.5 µg/m³, placing the entire province in the hazardous purple zone. All seven districts reported hourly average PM2.5 concentrations in the danger zone. Despite calls for residents to refrain from burning rice stubble and weeds, the province’s basin-like geography and lack of wind circulation have led to worsening air quality.

The number of respiratory illness cases linked to PM2.5 pollution has risen, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Authorities have urged extra caution for these high-risk groups. (TNA)
