The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has initiated the deployment of AI-enhanced CCTV cameras to enforce traffic laws more efficiently, targeting motorcyclists who illegally ride on pavements.

According to the BMA, the system integrates AI technology with existing CCTV networks to allow for 24-hour monitoring and instant identification of violations, moving away from the previous method, which depended on manual enforcement by city officials.

The technological upgrade is set to enhance the accuracy and impartiality of traffic law enforcement. Offenders can now be swiftly identified, with the AI system providing clear evidence that supports the issuance of fines, set at 2,000 baht for riding on pavements. By reducing the need for municipal officials to manually check footage, the system frees up resources and focuses on behavioral correction and public safety improvements.

The AI initiative is currently being piloted in 15 areas across Bangkok, including Phya Thai, Ratchathewi, and Yan Nawa, among others. (NNT)
