BANGKOK, Thailand – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is urging residents to choose environmentally friendly options for this year’s Loy Krathong Festival (Nov 15) by using krathongs (floating baskets) made from natural materials. In efforts to reduce waste and pollution, the BMA recommends that families limit themselves to one krathong per family, opting for smaller-sized krathongs and floating them in closed water sources whenever possible.
For those wishing to participate without impacting the environment, the BMA suggests online krathong floating as a modern alternative. They also advise against using bread krathongs, krathongs made from ice cream cones, or fish food krathongs, as these can disturb local ecosystems. Paper krathongs and natural materials are preferred, while foam krathongs should be avoided entirely.
This eco-conscious approach aims to reduce pollution and encourage sustainable festival practices. The Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, also supports these guidelines for a more environmentally friendly Loy Krathong.
